Maybe that’s their plan? First wave are nothing but issues so the bots can buy it and the second wave will get to the real users

This happened with my 1070. They sent me some thermal pads and had me download a different bios for the gpu. Now that im thinking about it there is probably a reason that card died.... F

I have decades of computer repair experience under my belt so that wasnt a big deal. If I sent it in I would have been without a card for weeks. It was thousands of cards that got hit with it so they didnt have them to send prior to you sending yours in like more recent problems have done. This was like 6 years ago.

My EVGA 1070 was one of the ones without thermal pads on the VRMs or whatever the issue was, it started artifacting and freaking out after a few weeks. Usable, but clearly messed up.

It's why I will miss EVGA, called them up and they shipped me a new card immediately (by time the card starting taking a dump the issue was known) and told me to use the defective one until the new one came in and then ship out the old one with a paid return label. I know being a fanboy of a brand is dumb, but damn they are the one company (at least for GPU's) I'd buy every time no matter what.

That wasn't even close to my experience. I called them after the issue was known and told them I was having all the issues and they told me that I could either send the card in for them to fix and send it back or have them send out the pad and email me a link to download a file to install. I obviously took the option where I could continue to use my computer. I even asked if there was any way for them to send me a fixed model and I send it back and they said they just didnt have the inventory because so many cards were hit with it. I haven't purchased anything EVGA since.

EVGA was top tier in customer service. I went through 3 2080Ti's with defective micron memory. They cross shipped for every card next day shipping. I finally ended up with Samsung memory and zero problems after.

How come AMD themselves made such a faux pas while their third party devs had adequate cooling? I kind of get it because the reference cards are always so generic and modestly designed where as vendors throw fans and exaggerated cooling fins everywhere.

If they didn’t have the inventory, that response seems pretty reasonable to me….no reason to ditch a GPU brand imo. At least they offered solutions that still would fix the problem.

In my experience, AMD reference cards are usually over-designed and highly tunable, whether you want to tune for speed or efficiency. They might screw up a cooler every now and again, but reference cards get aftermarket coolers made for them. The Tahiti reference board is a good example.

Having just installed a 4080 - I simply can't image the coolers being larger that that!!! LOL

The 4080 I installed is just under 14" long. Not sure if it's considered 3 or 4 cards wide.
