Obligatory "my Microcenter has a bunch actually."

If only there were people on the internet that would run tests and tell us if we should avoid the reference cards

How dare you use logic!

That's the joke, I do happen to have one like 15 minutes away though

K. But do you know how many stores they have
AxTROUSRxMISSLE t1_j2bj4ue wrote
Not that many, are you like upset about my joke or just asking?

Youre probably fun to be around.

I dont really understand where you're coming from with this, I made the joke because I know they aren't everywhere...

Local only, so not really a big help to those of us on the internet at large.
adzman t1_j2bem6e wrote
I lucked out with one on the best buy website. Though it's an XFX and not an AMD reference model thankfully.
blaze53 t1_j2cwbms wrote
How big are the coolers? Same size as Nvidia or smaller?
adzman t1_j2cyuqi wrote
Bigger I'd say. The temps have been fine, and I've been gaming for basically 12 hours now.
cardcomm t1_j2e31b0 wrote
Having just installed a 4080 - I simply can't image the coolers being larger that that!!! LOL
The 4080 I installed is just under 14" long. Not sure if it's considered 3 or 4 cards wide.
adzman t1_j2eyld6 wrote
I mean, last Nvidia card I had was a 2070, so my reference is probably outdated. Definitely 3 slots wide though.
Caughtnow t1_j2bgsqk wrote
So it could be worse?
Zanzaclese t1_j2aza8d wrote
This happened with my 1070. They sent me some thermal pads and had me download a different bios for the gpu. Now that im thinking about it there is probably a reason that card died.... F
plomerosKTBFFH t1_j2bg9bs wrote
You had to open up and fix the GPU yourself? Yeah fuck that I'd want a new one or them to do it with an extended warranty.
Zanzaclese t1_j2bqrr6 wrote
I have decades of computer repair experience under my belt so that wasnt a big deal. If I sent it in I would have been without a card for weeks. It was thousands of cards that got hit with it so they didnt have them to send prior to you sending yours in like more recent problems have done. This was like 6 years ago.
PatchettB t1_j2c4guj wrote
My EVGA 1070 was one of the ones without thermal pads on the VRMs or whatever the issue was, it started artifacting and freaking out after a few weeks. Usable, but clearly messed up.
It's why I will miss EVGA, called them up and they shipped me a new card immediately (by time the card starting taking a dump the issue was known) and told me to use the defective one until the new one came in and then ship out the old one with a paid return label. I know being a fanboy of a brand is dumb, but damn they are the one company (at least for GPU's) I'd buy every time no matter what.
scipher99 t1_j2c8y8z wrote
EVGA was top tier in customer service. I went through 3 2080Ti's with defective micron memory. They cross shipped for every card next day shipping. I finally ended up with Samsung memory and zero problems after.
JelloSquirrel t1_j2egxji wrote
EVGA was probably killed by miners. Way too easy to send back GPUs that died of thermals.
Zanzaclese t1_j2c5ugi wrote
That wasn't even close to my experience. I called them after the issue was known and told them I was having all the issues and they told me that I could either send the card in for them to fix and send it back or have them send out the pad and email me a link to download a file to install. I obviously took the option where I could continue to use my computer. I even asked if there was any way for them to send me a fixed model and I send it back and they said they just didnt have the inventory because so many cards were hit with it. I haven't purchased anything EVGA since.
lukeb15 t1_j2cq7s8 wrote
If they didn’t have the inventory, that response seems pretty reasonable to me….no reason to ditch a GPU brand imo. At least they offered solutions that still would fix the problem.
Mention_Forward t1_j2e7gw2 wrote
Yooo my 1070 has the same issue!
RedX801 t1_j2a6rfn wrote
Maybe that’s their plan? First wave are nothing but issues so the bots can buy it and the second wave will get to the real users
Blewdude t1_j2ad4cg wrote
:( i got the first wave lol luckily no noticeable issues.
CleanSnchz t1_j2azpb5 wrote
What do you use it for?
LuckyCharms201 t1_j2am8tv wrote
…so when do we get wave 2?
iPhoneMiniWHITE t1_j2cc6kd wrote
How come AMD themselves made such a faux pas while their third party devs had adequate cooling? I kind of get it because the reference cards are always so generic and modestly designed where as vendors throw fans and exaggerated cooling fins everywhere.
Derringer62 t1_j2cy1ns wrote
In my experience, AMD reference cards are usually over-designed and highly tunable, whether you want to tune for speed or efficiency. They might screw up a cooler every now and again, but reference cards get aftermarket coolers made for them. The Tahiti reference board is a good example.
