I read (most of the article).

The person who was slipped the AirTag hadn’t been charged with a crime which they bring to attention to say “maybe the boomer FED agent tipped off the person and fucked up the investigation”.

My coworker was notified of an AirTag tracking him after driving around with me and my bag (which I keep my airtag in) for about 6 hours. Why did anyone think this is a good idea, and how’d it work?

ifarteditssmelly t1_jdggcpu wrote

Same with my mom she got an AirTag set it up we went out for like 4 hours came home and I only got the notification 1 hour after she left home AFTER the 4 hours out.

RBVegabond t1_jdh1x4h wrote

Makes sense if the owner is with you, that it wouldn’t notify until they are not with you.

ifarteditssmelly t1_jdi5a21 wrote

But we were home for over an hour and then she left AND THEN I got it

RBVegabond t1_jdi7l9b wrote

Yes. If the owner of the tag is in proximity it will relay off the tag and not alert other devices around. This stops annoying things like driving passed someone and it alerting them about proximity, walking in public and alerting everyone. If the person leaves proximity after a while it will alert to let you know in case someone was following you and is no longer there. It’s not going to be immediate if the relay is in proximity, as like you and your mother, there can be a legitimate reason for it being there.

same, gave my airpods to my GF, took them off my account, we went out and my phone had notices that a set of airpods was traveling with me for an hour. she got a notice that the prior owner of the airpods may be tracking her location even though it’s not on my find my iphone account

imakesawdust t1_jdhogl8 wrote

I thought the "there's an airtag near you" only kicks in if the airtag has been separated from its parent device for more than X minutes? If you were also in the vehicle (presumably with your phone), why did your friend get a notification?

5

excessCeramic t1_jdquolw wrote

I was in the vehicle, no idea. I had to explain to him what an AirTag is.

Taxes is theft. Change my mind.

−5

faux_real77 t1_jdixzrw wrote

The statement "taxes is theft" is grammatically flawed because the subject and verb do not agree in number. "Taxes" is a plural noun, while "is" is a singular verb. The correct grammatical form would be "taxes are theft."

Doesnt Apple have a specific clause in their user agreement that makes you pay an absurdly high penalty if you are caught using it for stalking ?

30

munkeyears t1_jdh960m wrote

Tell that reassuring piece of information to the dead/raped stalking victims.

Clarkeprops t1_jdhr7dl wrote

The AirTag is the WORST tracker for stalkers. It has the stalkers personal ID embedded in the device, all the tracking data is stored with apple, and it tells the target that it’s tracking them.

It’s like you’re trying to get caught. Meanwhile, there are devices you can buy that are THE SAME PRICE that do none of those things

mcjohnson415 t1_jdl44ac wrote

It is not intended to be a stalking tool. It is great for following my luggage and my friend’s pets and that is the intended use. It was not designed to be a tool for pervs and thieves. That does not stop paranoid folks from imagining that use.

Clarkeprops t1_jdlxgbw wrote

That’s my issue. Stupidity makes any fear possible, then we can’t have nice things

2

SpecialNose9325 t1_jdhb2dj wrote

The key word being "Caught". Apple isnt actively monitoring who is using Airtags for what. The clause only comes into effect if it goes to court and Apple is defamed in the process.

13

Hydroxychloroquinoa t1_jdhj8bm wrote

no i believe that is tile and the penalty is because it doesnt have some of the anti-stalking measures like the airtag

5

Clarkeprops t1_jdhrb0r wrote

Yet everyone is freaking out about AirTags because they still have no idea Tile exists

6

qtzd t1_jdhwbp6 wrote

Or any other number of GPS based tracking devices which require no network of devices (like AirTags or Tiles) and don’t alert your phone if they’re tracking you. This is what law enforcement generally uses to track suspects. Throwback to the on Redditor who found one on their friends car years ago and federal agents asked for it back lol

one_classy_broad t1_jdghod5 wrote

I just watched a Dateline episode where the cops air tagged or placed a GPS monitor on the car of a person of interest... my first question was is that legal?

Turns out he did it anyway, but still...

12

_no_pants t1_jdhc5u0 wrote

Pretty sure it is legal and if you find it and destroy you have to pay for the equipment.

2

singingquest t1_jdhxgy4 wrote

Not a lawyer, but if the cops had a valid search warrant, then yeah that’s probably legal. Even if they didn’t have a search warrant, it might still be legal. That would maybe depend on things like whether the person of interest was only being tracked in public places, whether the cops themselves physically planted the airtag on the person of interest or his possessions, etc.

Fakeduhakkount t1_jdgjdlu wrote

“It’s not entirely clear why the agency would’ve opted for an AirTag…”

Easy, find this crap and people wouldn’t think Feds would be involved. Actually using a dedicated tracking device and red flags aplenty

Ahh yes. Buy a couple of these and then pocket the rest of the money you pulled out for these cases. Simple tbh.

1

Mobely t1_jdhkfry wrote

There is an algorithm to prevent false positives. Part of that probably takes awhile to determine a malicious tag
