My coworker was notified of an AirTag tracking him after driving around with me and my bag (which I keep my airtag in) for about 6 hours. Why did anyone think this is a good idea, and how’d it work?

Makes sense if the owner is with you, that it wouldn’t notify until they are not with you.

But we were home for over an hour and then she left AND THEN I got it

Yes. If the owner of the tag is in proximity it will relay off the tag and not alert other devices around. This stops annoying things like driving passed someone and it alerting them about proximity, walking in public and alerting everyone. If the person leaves proximity after a while it will alert to let you know in case someone was following you and is no longer there. It’s not going to be immediate if the relay is in proximity, as like you and your mother, there can be a legitimate reason for it being there.

same, gave my airpods to my GF, took them off my account, we went out and my phone had notices that a set of airpods was traveling with me for an hour. she got a notice that the prior owner of the airpods may be tracking her location even though it’s not on my find my iphone account

I thought the "there's an airtag near you" only kicks in if the airtag has been separated from its parent device for more than X minutes? If you were also in the vehicle (presumably with your phone), why did your friend get a notification?

I was in the vehicle, no idea. I had to explain to him what an AirTag is.

Maybe they knew the suspect had an android device...
