Swimming! Did he swim from the Mexican shores to the TX ones? Or was he dumped in the Gulf of Mexico in some way?

Plot twist: grandpa was from Spain. He swam the whole way to Texas.

I mean, dude did live to almost 100 and only stopped riding his bike everywhere in his 80s after having it stolen getting jumped in Chicago.
