Asda? The Walmart of the UK

39

NSC_D34thJ t1_ix4j91s wrote

Quite literally. Asda is owned by walmart

2

Bvenged t1_ix4sdo4 wrote

Didn't it get bought out last year from Walmart?

4

Historical-Cicada-29 t1_ix4vadn wrote

No, ASDA was Walmarts branch into the UK.

They just didnt want to carry the name, similar to Vauxhall and Opel.

3

doginjoggers t1_ix54a0a wrote

Asda was always the Walmart of the UK, long before Walmart bought them, that's why it was such a perfect match.

People are calling her stupid, but I think the last basket is glued to the frame, so that others can stack or remove a basket from it. She's obviously decided since there were no more left to take the frame as well.

20

Spedding t1_ix6ru5l wrote

Not sure if you're joking but it's 100% not glued. I work at Asda and due to the added weight of all the other baskets, the bottom one gets a bit wedged in the holder. Usually requires a little bit more effort to remove the last basket. I've seen people walking round exactly like this lady

ToastedCheezer t1_ix440lf wrote

There were no carts?

2

Dan19_82 t1_ix4fnke wrote

Some places link them together and you have to use a special coin or a £1 to remove one. She might not have had any cash. We often use debit cards instead.

1

coreybd t1_ix4xw6m wrote

People charge for carts and baskets?

−2

dontpassgo t1_ix4zhgn wrote

You drop the coin in the handle, then can disconnect it from the others and use. At the end of shopping you connect the cart to others and get the coin back.

6

coreybd t1_ix528tl wrote

Ahh okay. Suppose deterring people from stealing all the carts. Getting the money back makes sense

1

woogs t1_ix57o3k wrote

Not so much stealing but people leaving the carts in the parking lots.

7

PenIsBroken t1_ix557db wrote

Yeah it looks like the handle is missing from that basket, so actually carrying it round like this is probably better than trying to carry it with her arms and having to put it on the floor every time she wants to grab something off the shelf.

People like this are the reason we put idiotic warnings like "coffee is hot" on things. Some people just need explicit directions.

9

Duwt t1_ix3v4ja wrote

McDonalds has spent a lot of money to convince you that those warning labels are for the “stupid and clumsy”, and not because they burned a grandmother’s skin off.

28

GhostalkerS t1_ix3x5if wrote

Additionally hot coffee at Starbucks for instance is served plenty hot at 150 to 170 degrees. McDonald’s was serving coffee at 190 degrees (some sources say as hot as 205), which could cause third degree burns in as little as three seconds. This was going on for at least a decade prior with numerous complaints. Imagine any given day a three second mistake as mundane as spilling your coffee could require a skin graft.

21

iDuddits_ t1_ix4fjy3 wrote

yeah I drink my coffee black. I'd have to wait 20 minutes with the lid open before I could start drinking

takecaretakecare t1_ix458zo wrote

I’ve met that woman. She definitely deserved compensation, the injuries are rough. Also worth it to note the judge was hyper annoyed that this was like the fifteenth McDonald’s coffee injury that had been through the courts that year, so he hit them where it hurt. She did not request that level of compensation.

14

almost_queen t1_ix3xpj5 wrote

No, I get that, and I know that woman had a REAL claim against them. Her injuries were horrific. You know what I meant.

5

username_unnamed t1_ix3ykwz wrote

I don't believe they do. Mcdonalds tried defending themselves when they were forced to put warnings on their cups because they keep coffee extraordinarily hot to serve longer. That's a reasonable call for a warning label than assuming it's just a little hot.

6

free_my_ninja t1_ix7mjok wrote

And now every coffee cup from McDonald’s to Starbucks has a warning label whether it’s 150 or 200 degrees.

I’ve been to some stores where the last one is screwed into the frame. I think there’s a psychological aspect to having one in place that serves as a reminder to put it back when you’re done with it.
