Is there a real egg shortage?

In New Zealand, yes. There were regulation changes in 2012 which were to come into effect 2023 (i.e.now), banning the inhumane production of chicken eggs. The supermarkets were all on board with this as well, and essentially means all eggs need to come from somewhat ethical sources. Barn raised at the minimum, no cages, etc.
The egg producing farmers dragged thier feet for the decade they had to make the changes, cos, of course, those changes cost money and reduced production quota, so it was financially unsound to do anything prematurely.
Only, most waited until AFTER the change to START making changes, meaning we only had the "ethical" brands still able to supply the entire country, and we very quickly ran out, and here we are.
