The tree trimming DOES HAVE TO DO WITH IT CAUSE THAT'S WHY THEY'RE UP THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE TO GET STUCK

Yeah, that’s the throw off for me. Makes it all about trimming the tree and ends up having absolutely nothing to do with what’s happening. Everyone here is just, “aww, cat! Cuuute!”

Cats often climb on trees. They could climb down or just jump, but often, they act like they are afrait.
People notice them, and try to climb the tree and rescue the cat, or call the firefighters to come with their ladders.

In the end, happily climbing a tree, but then act afrait when they should go back is a typical cat thing! :)

So cutting the branches has absolutely nothing to do with the joke?

Depends.
In the first place: No, it has nothing to do with the joke!
In the second place: It is the reason the cat did climb the tree. The title could not be "Poor Career Choice" if the cat had climbed the tree for are reason that is unrelented to the cats job!

And their claws point backwards, so it’s way easier for them to climb UP things than it is to climb back down, iirc

My aunt is an emergency services dispatcher. She likes to say ‘I understand there’s a cat stuck in the tree, but when’s the last time you saw a cat skeleton in a tree?’ Their fire department does not respond to cats in tree calls.

Someone told me, depending who is watching, they just use the waterstream to push the cat from the tree.
