Based on above comment about squiggly lines, Philly incorporated lots of surrounding cities increasing their population dramatically.

Is that it? Or was it the Irish Catholics just hitting their stride? 100 couples (1 parish) x 7 kids in a decade lines up. Spread that across 100 parishes? Sheesh!
