I'd add a row to compute percentage of total annual expenditure. I can do that roughly in my head by doubling the thousands number.

"Retail" is a mystery to me and your highest percentage.

I had 2 big purchases this year for my hobbies. One in February and one in August. Retail is stuff I bought from a store that doesn’t fall under entertainment (concerts/movies/sports).

Nice work. It takes a lot of work to record all of that

You might consider googling “profit and loss statement” and formatting the same as that. It then can have the option of category totals such as below. If you’re interested I can share a spreadsheet with you

Gross Income

Deductions/tax

Net income

Expenses (all various categories)

Total expenses

Operating profit

Savings

Net profit

Why did you move? That expense went way up but didn't lower your transportation cost. And you were still in the same job.

I moved to a nicer neighborhood and went from living with 3 roommates to 1. There are reasons to move besides being closer to work.

A lot of numbers here are confusing, especially for that retail expense. I would guess that the reason for the move was going from remote to in-office work. I have no idea why OP's housing costs fluctuate so much though, even if you include utilities.

My housing costs fluctuate because my roommates are bad at keeping track of utilities and I wasn’t charged every month. I also included purchases for things that were for the house. What’s confusing about retail?

That makes more sense. Why is retail so damn high?! I'm guessing the 4K is August was related to the move in July, maybe furniture or something, but I can't think of any other major expense in retail other than clothing and maybe electronics, but those are large non-recurring expenses. I find it hard to believe that you'd be buying nearly a thousand dollars worth of clothes every month, so it's probably a subcategory I'm not thinking of, but I have no idea what it is.

Retail includes all purchases from stores. I bought a lot of gear this year because I finally have the time and money to do so. In august I bought a nice bike. I do not expect retail to be that high this year. I was making up for living very frugally previously.

If you want to keep track of your spending and keep it under control, I recommend YNAB. It's gonna save you a ton of time and it's way more convenient.

Nice work it’s good to have an idea where your spending is. Taxes are my largest expense. I include tracking them.

ironicsharkhada OP t1_j4c7szu wrote

That's not a bad idea. I made this tool to keep track of my disposable income and make sure I was not over spending. A taxes and investment column would be a nice addition though.

This implies you saved delta of $59k - $57, about $2k over 1 year? I see headline says after investing. But chart implies you leave paycheck to paycheck.

ironicsharkhada OP t1_j4iufs4 wrote

I didn’t include income that went to taxes or savings because this chart is just a representation of my disposable income. I was under budget and the remaining 2k will just add a bump to my savings.
