if India is second largest exporter and second largest producer why does it need to import rice?

Mainly because countries need to maintain foreign relations and trade on mutually agreed commodities but if we look at it on a micro level, India can very well fulfill its demand but some people for the sake of international products would import rice and that could also account for some of it

The rice varieties consumed and grown in India are different from rice varieties that are grown in other countries imo. Especially rice used in all East Asian cuisines seems to be rather sticky which I doubt is produced in India so these may be imported
