Science fiction did that well before Facebook.

Few people think of Fortnite as a Metaverse.

Most think of a Metaverse as a place you can do many things in an immersive environment.

Random games don't come to mind as universal immersive worlds.

I don’t profess to know much about the modern definition. I’m just pointing out how it was referred to in the late 90s, early 2000s.
