It makes sense that someone running for President would have more search interest than someone not running for office, and that search interest around election time would be higher for the person who had been President for 4 years than one of their challengers.

But look at recent data. Even 2 years after leaving office, Trump is more searched than Biden, who is the current president.

It could be because he is still embroiled in legal challenges from when he was President, and a significant portion of voters believe that he is still the legitimate US President...
As of a few months ago, 40% of voters thought that Trump lost illegitimately.

This would explain why he doesn't have much search interest prior to his campaign, despite being a TV celebrity, a famously controversial Tweeter, and a name in the public consciousness for decades prior to 2016.
