From our newsletter:

The cost of mobile data across the world has been steadily dropping. According to cable.co.uk statistics, almost all countries have experienced a significant price drop.

Even the most expensive country for mobile online browsing in LatAm, Cuba, saw a drop from $13.33 per GB in 2020 to $3.10 in 2022. In fact, according to the Alliance for Affordable Internet, from 2015 to 2020, the world's average price of mobile data as a percentage of income dropped by more than half.

The drops are partly due to increases in competition and the introduction of new technologies like 5G. Spectrum auctions have played a part in price reductions. Spectrum auctions are like big sales, where telecom companies bid and pay the government for the right to use parts of the airwaves to improve their services and coverage. This gamification for providing mobile services increases competition and further drives cost down.

Institutions are also responsible for developing the infrastructure to reach telecom accessibility and affordability. Funttel in Brazil, for example, has been successful in expanding mobile coverage in rural areas and increasing access to mobile services for low-income and disadvantaged populations since its implementation in 2000.

Does anyone actually pay by the GB though? Pay monthly for unlimited in ireland its like 15 euro.

Perspective on Bolivia

after 6 months what you charge is doubled

if I put 10 bucks I get 20

then if I charge 5Go for the month and I don't use them they add up to my next charge so they aren't lost

5Gb plus illimited WhatsApp is 7 dollars a month (really half that since they double what you charge once a month)

add a few not WhatsApp calls, I think I pay about 5 dollars a month for my phone

so overall I pay very little every month since I have no monthly subscription, and most of my calls and data are via Wifi

According to the graph Ireland has 1.5 euro per GB, so for 15 euro per month be worth it you would have to use more than 10GB of mobile data per month.

Do you guys actually use that much? Lol

I live in Panama and pay $5 a week for unlimited data. I use on average 12GB per week of mobile data so this chart is a little misleading. According to these prices I would be paying upwards of $40 a week

Zhig_ t1_j5tsvsl wrote

Not really misleading, it is for the price per gb, I think it would if they were talking about overall data prices. But most likely they also have better deals in the data plans out there. Also from Panama though, I wanted to ask, which data provider u use? I am planning on swapping but I don't know which one to chose.

Those plans also exist in Portugal. They’re pretty discriminatory tho, despite the majority of consumers loving it. Telecommunications companies aren’t legally entitled (or at least shouldn’t) to tell you which apps are or aren’t worthy of free mobile data.

MordorsElite t1_j5tw5w4 wrote

I guess it depends on your circumstances. I have WiFi at home where I both work and spend most of my free time, so while I used like 100mb of mobile data last month, I have over 60GB of WiFi usage.

Navarchs t1_j5txhfl wrote

Ah should have mentioned that's calls and texts too, but yeah depends on the month sometimes its way more sometimes less. On a bus watching shows is usually the data eater.

Ironically if I call foreign EU numbers from my country ( Croatia ) they’ll charge me some ridiculous price like 0.6€ per minute, bit if i ride like 50km and cross border to Slovenia and connect to their network all my calls within EU are free

As a Panamanian I can tell you there is a lot wrong with that graph. Basic unlimited data plans here go from 20 to 30 dollars a month. I pay 20. Data here is pretty cheap all things considered. The data for others countries is likely incorrect as well.

Because installing fiber into the current building I live in is not viable. It's DSL internet instead. It's not like I'd just choose to have 6 Mbps when 1/10gig is an option. Instead unlimited data in a loosely rural but resort area means that it's much more effective to use cellular instead.

This was the whole net neutrality debate in the US. AT&T wanted to buy direct TV and then make it free to watch their streaming service over data whilst charging you for other services data.

At least in terms of international communication, the US has repeatedly refused to let Cuba connect to international undersea cables, which leaves other options for communication that are much more expensive. Plus, the 60-year, universally condemned embargo by the US doesn't help either.

I currently live between Mexico and Cuba. In Mexico I get unlimited calls, texts, social networks plus 3 GB of misc for about $15/month. Service is good and fast. In Cuba I have to pay about $65/month for limited calls, texts and data. Service is terrible, coverage comes and goes and the speed is s-l-o-w. We always know when something unflattering for the government is happening because they cut the cell service.

1

Kay_0zz t1_j5wubp4 wrote

I pay $65 US/month for limited calls, text and data in Cuba. It is slow, drops connections and shuts down whenever there's a crisis. Add to this thought that $65 is three times the average monthly salary. Most heavy users (like my family) get their service paid by people who don't live in Cuba or have pensions in the US.

I agree that Rogers sucks, but you're not paying three times the average monthly salary to be abused.

Kay_0zz t1_j5wv51j wrote

It's a way for ETECSA (Cuba's state telecom monopoly) to get hard currency. Left your foreign phone on? Wait till you get home and see the next bill. My wife left her US chip in her phone for a day, made a couple of calls and used nav. $232.

Unlimited is probably not included in a graph showing per gigabyte rates. I would imagine on demand but unit-wise plans or fixed plans are to be able to calculate a number. But it should definitely be clarified.

PeruanoLiberal t1_j5xc4nu wrote

Don't mean to criticize you but doesn't seem accurate to me, in Argentina for that price you'd get 2GB or more, anyways there are different packs, combos, promotions and crap so you can't measure it properly, but I seriously doubt it's same price as Ireland, you'd also had to take the correct price to convert from ARS to USD which I doubt you've done since that isn't the official one you'd find in Google.

And mainly that, we're a hard countries to measure and compare economic numbers, and tbh I think thats done on purpose by our beautiful government

Oh yeah, and speeds and service quality is different too (of course worse in LATAM)

No, I did wonder about that some time ago and I don't remember exactly what it is, but there is a law/rule in place that prevents it.

Edit: Found the rule. If you used up more data in another country than the one from where you got the subscription, it's no longer considered fair use and the provider can give you a warning, 2 weeks after which you will be charged €2 per GB.

¹ gives too much power to the big companies because they are the ones that are free to consume with it and the rest of the web dies off.

AfricanNorwegian t1_j5xy7dq wrote

Well it’s unlimited in that you can use unlimited data past 100GB at no extra cost, but yeah the speed throttling is very annoying. I believe the US has it similar though and most of their ‘unlimited’ plans throttle you after 25-50GB.

I can just tell from personal experiences. I had O2 but had no connection at places from some relatives (Harz area, Münsterland). My cousin has still O2 and when we visit those places, he is dependent on wifi. Recently we were on a trip to Ostsee and stayed somewhere in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Same issue. I switched to Telecom as prepaid. No issues so far in those areas. Vodafone was also ok.
