Data from trends.google.com. I checked which the most googled game (out of a list of over 100) was each month during 2022, and then counted which game was the top game for most months.

As has been the case for most of the time since 2011, Minecraft has been the top game, but now Roblox is creeping in. Elden Ring also made an appearance in 2022.

Did something happen with Minecraft in 2022? Was there a major update?

The last major update was right at the end of 2021.

But also, Minecraft is the best selling game of all time, and has sold almost twice the copies of the next highest.

The game resurged in popularity in 2019 due to the combination of well-received updates and popular livestreamers. It's retained a good chunk of this popularity ever since.
