Are the odds for the final really exactly 50-50?

dakeenmachine t1_j0o86s6 wrote

I checked 6 betting websites, 5 had Argentina favourites 2.7 return vs France 2.75 or 2.8 return. One had France as a favourite. So no not 50/50 from what I can see.

Check the source. It was exactly 50/50 yesterday when I did this. Today it's 51/49. It's moving.

And if France wins you'll get an F.

(A for Argentina, F for France)

How does it make sense that Croatia's chances were greater before the game with Japan than before the next game with Brasil?

Jonathan-Shimshoni t1_j0oelg7 wrote

They drew that game 0-0 against Belgium with a lot of luck and didn’t show much quality

zebulon99 t1_j0pbwvx wrote

Yeah but belgium is on paper really good, i think they were ranked top 5 before the wc, so a draw against them should be good no?

Jonathan-Shimshoni t1_j0pde1s wrote

Rankings don’t mean anything.

Belgium were not playing good and just lost 2-0 to Morocco.

Fifa rankings literally mean nothing. They're calculated in a bizzare way.

Brazil won and was known as next opponent. Sure, they were strong favorites against South Korea anyway, but Croatia's chance to win overall would have relied on pretty unlikely outcomes anyway and an upset victory of South Korea would have helped a lot (Croatia beating Brazil was the other unlikely option, of course). Argentina and the Netherlands won their games, too, so the semifinal was guaranteed to have a strong opponent as well. Add a weak performance against Japan to the mix.

HucHuc t1_j0rvltl wrote

Bookmakers don't care about strength of teams, but about money bet on each side. If you see 5:1 odds for team A against team B, chances are team B has 5x more money bet on it already. Apparently Croatia had less bets as a percentage of all remaining teams after the game with Japan.

Weird how France had such low chances when they were on the opposite side of the bracket compared to Brazil and Argentina.

Personally, France and England were my favourite teams ^^

If there is one team I can guarantee(-ish) will not win, that is England. Always hot in, thinking they are the best, but their inflated egos never get them anywhere. When that is said, England for sure has some great young talent coming up.

Flobarooner t1_j0prh77 wrote

God fuck off it gets so tiring reading salty anglophobes constantly chat this utter nonsense about us having "inflated egos", probably the least egotistical big team in the entire tournament. Who on the England team has an ego? Literally none of them, a group of players renowned for being humble. And then we lose to France, a team full of massive fucking egos, mostly because of the ref. So I don't see how you can "guarantee" we wouldn't win

UsrHpns4rctct t1_j0s15zo wrote

The nation, not the players. British media somehow seems to think that England "surely will and deserve to be up there", but time and again reality hits them when yet another cup is over and England has traveled home a week or two before the final.

1

ClarenceTheClam t1_j0prx3w wrote

In no way is this actually true though. You're getting confused by a comedy football song ("It's coming home"), and the general jokey positive atmosphere around English football at the moment now that we're no longer absolutely dreadful every tournament. The idea of England being any more arrogant about their chances than any other nation is just a meme (for us and other nations).

The players are a young and down to earth group, the manager is the furthest from arrogant you can get, and no pundits back here were seriously predicting England to win the world cup. On the BBC the predictions were 7x Brazil, 3 x Argentina, 2 x France and 1 x England (which she admitted was just a heart decision and her head said Brazil).

As for guaranteeing we'll never win anything, I can't really disagree considering we've never won a thing in my lifetime, but we were only a penalty shootout away from winning the Euros!

UsrHpns4rctct t1_j0rzxs6 wrote

Euros sure was close to a miracle. Be real, England/british is systematically arrogant. Hyping up everything with a UK-passport (and English) and playing in EPL, and talking down any equally great player who are not English. Or imagine a English player doing rather well, but are sadly not doing it in EPL are totally ignored...

bsnimunf t1_j0q958h wrote

England never go into a world cup thinking they are the best. That is the most ridiculous shit I have ever heard. They are world class professional players who play in the premier League and champions league against the best players in the world they know exactly the quality of player and teams they are facing and know that even if you are the best your going to have to fight tooth and nail to even get to the semis.

If anything the fans have a generally pessimistic attitude.

1

UsrHpns4rctct t1_j0ry3ez wrote

They are a few good players that are being hyped into insanity because of their passport (Kane is a great example of that). Just as any similarly good player are discredited because they are not british, playing in EPL.

It's also interesting that the expectation (that you put forward) for such a team is semi-finals in a World Cup. It was a wonder (esp. with Southgate) that they got to the last EC-final. A semi (in WC) for England is possible but surely not where they realistically is going to be.

0

bsnimunf t1_j0tarvt wrote

I don't put forward an expectation I merely pointed out that even the most highly ranked teams have to work very hard to make it to the semis to illustrate the high standard of sport the is played in the world cup and that the players and teams know that so I doubt any team is going in with an inflated ego. Also last world cup England got to the semis so in terms of results Southgate is probably the best performing England manager since 66.
