Probably be a shorter list if it were, "...on the right track".

Not surprised to be on the top 5 here. Spain has a very bad perception of itself, and the 2008 recession hit so hard here that we pretty much never recovered from it. The country suffers a lot from being too dependant on tourism as well, and covid hit us like a truck. Now, with the Ukraine war and the everstopping rise of prices, we seem to be in the verge of recession again, with absolutely no signs of a speedy recovery.

Ireland got its golden age with IT and we should try to get it with renewable energy, since we have a lot of empty space, tons of sunlight and have already a sizable eolic infrastructure, but our politicians' complete lack of awareness will probably bust it. Then foreign investors will take the opportunity and we'll keep being poor, yay!

Funny that the Nordic countries don't have a higher positive portion. Everyone else seems to think they are the best.

I’m from the Netherlands and I’m not surprised by the negative opinion. We are dealing with loads of crises at the same time at the moment (housing shortage, shortage of workers, nitrogen crisis, growing expenses for health care, energy crisis, problems related to climate change, angry farmers, etc.). I have a feeling many of these could have been avoided if the government had been more proactive over the last 20 years instead of (seemingly) turning a blind and hoping things will get solved by themselves.

There's a large evangelical Christian population who believe if things get bad enough then Jesus will be forced to come back and take them all to Heaven, which is all they really want. Maybe it's those folks?

Until we abolish greed, no country is headed in the right direction.

The political situation in Sweden has been an absolute shitshow the last decade, where neither the right-wing nor left-wing parties have been able to reach a conclusion or collaborate effectively. Both sides are pretty unhappy about the situation, although I do think things have improved the last few years.
