i applied to entry level SWE jobs at quant finance and med-big tech companies. some of my friends have applied to 500+ positions with no luck. economy is rough and most companies dont want to hire new grads

That is rough. It ended up being a new grad I hired but again, 3 applicants. I have been lucky I suppose, I worked patient care for 15 years before I started in the informatics/data analytics side. Job hunts have been fairly easy because of the healthcare background with some tech.
