Surprised to see I am Legend so high up for such a bad movie, in my opinion.

Are these numbers adjusted for todays dollar?

So many good movies mixed in with so many bad movies

Very surprised to see 2 Resident Evil films on here. Then again I’m in the domestic market so I guess that makes sense.
Also, A Quiet Place is definitely top 5 horror/sci-fi films. Such a fascinating and fresh concept for a post apocalyptic future.
Gravel090 t1_iulbmgf wrote
There are 3 RE movies on there!

The source link says it's not , at the bottom. A bit disappointing.

I am surprised to NOT see The Shining on here. Edit: never mind. Box office gross of The Shining was a meager $47 million.

Comic sans' cousin is certainly horrific, but would be interesting to compare this to profit.
Hamborrower t1_iuliiae wrote
I liked it a lot. Also never really thought of it as a horror movie.
Hamborrower t1_iulil3j wrote
Now I see why they kept making Resident Evil movies after they got unwatchably bad. International market baby!
DocPeacock t1_iulip0e wrote
I have never heard of these Annabelle movies.
RomromEmpire t1_iuliy0t wrote
At the time Will smith was huge, and there were not so many horror vehicule movies. Also, the fact that it was from a book made people curious i guess ?

No grossing data has value unless it is adapted to inflation / price tickets
Axnahunt t1_iulk0nt wrote
Agreed.. loved the movie and I really don’t think it’s a horror movie.

Wow, you're the first person I've heard to not like I am Legend. What made you dislike it?
Valium_Knights t1_iulkmve wrote
I wish I could see a version of this list where it was adjusted for inflation and increased population. It makes it seem like the older movies performed worse when in reality it was simply a different time and earnings isn't an objective measure of how it performed for it's time.
Something_kool t1_iull3ps wrote
Is IT that good? Might need to check it out
rcollinsmac t1_iull6go wrote
I am Legend, isn’t a horror movie

Will Smith fanboy here. King Richard was a home run. Hope he can survive his Oscar mistake and make future good movies.
StormFinch t1_iuln99v wrote
Right? Jaws and Exorcist land at numbers 13 and 16 of the top grossing movies of all time per IMDB. Adjusted for inflation? $2.17 and 1.96 Billion respectively.

How the hell is The Nun on that list? That movie was so shit, I turned it off half way thru.
BoganSpecCommo t1_iulr8od wrote
It doesn't even make my top 10

I would hardly call I Am Legend a horror movie lol, nor Split or Alien: Covenant.
worldistooblue t1_iuls2kn wrote
Domestic to what? I am guessing this is created usa centric and it means sales in usa
dat_oracle t1_iuls3yy wrote
Saw 2 (the most successful part) made around 90 millions. I was also surprised that it's not on the list. It's definitely one of the best in that list. But i guess it's too much gore to have a larger audience

These top10 lists would be dominated by movies from the 30’s if adjusted for inflation. There’s no news in Gone With the Wind still #1!

Thank you for saying this. Let’s see this chart in inflation-adjusted dollars.

No Poltergeist or Shining? If this had been scaled for inflation I'm sure they'd be there and some of the recent trash movies would drop off.

well the movie isnt that good but i really like it also, itcan be mediocre and likable at the same time
stewieatb t1_ium8ix8 wrote
Almost certainly. I think some of these films were actually made outside North America too, so what the hell does "domestic" mean then?
JuRiOh t1_iumc939 wrote
Shining was only about 45m, which is around 150m when adjusted for inflation. Still wouldn't be on there.
Jaws however, which is already on the list, would have grossed over a billion. Pretty impressive.
JuRiOh t1_iumcqxh wrote
Warners Bros.

Or at least show production cost. I mean most horror movies are very cheap, but some of these were big budget movies and it would definitely change the order.
NeverDryTowels t1_iummpqz wrote
Yup, the list is kinda useless
huck500 t1_iumnujw wrote
The director's cut changes the movie significantly for the better. The ending of the theatrical cut is laughably bad, the ending of the director's cut actually reveals some meaningful story. I don't understand at all how anybody looked at those two endings and chose to release the theatrical one.
Goonskwizzle t1_iumplqp wrote
Now put it in an animation that changes by year. JK. I hate those.
Welshguy78 t1_iumpqmk wrote
Yeah but 250 million in the USA alone?? It was a shitty spin off. The reviews must have been pretty bad. I guess the momentum of the conjuring movies helped it be way bigger than it should have been.
Lopsided-Idea3971 t1_iumr3qo wrote
I never considered jaws a horror movie
Ebiig t1_iumrtww wrote
Is "domestic" relative to the country where the movie was produced? If so, there should be a label with the country next to the movies' names.

Not the person you're asking but they bought the rights to adapt a novel, then litterally massacred what made the novel unbelievably good, its ending.
It's a fucking shame cause the revised ending sucks. Why would they do that ?
Justisaur t1_iun3ivd wrote
Is that a horror movie?
I did suffer while watching it, and it caused memory loss, as I remember nothing about it.
KevinDean4599 t1_iun8tyj wrote
I wonder what films tend to be the most profitable when you look at cost to make and promote vs box office. Seems like horror would be generally profitable. Doesn’t rely on big name stars as much and many special effects aren’t over the top either

Estimated budget would be easier to account for and compare against than showing profit as /u/RedRedditor84 wants. Hollywood accounting won't let you get close to understanding actual profitability.
StormFinch t1_iunr340 wrote
When not filtered for the horror genre and then adjusted for inflation, they're 13 and 16 of the all-time highest earning. None of the others appear in that list. If the above amounts were adjusted for inflation, they would most likely have been at positions 1 and 2.

Most likely it has to do with the distributing company rather than where it was filmed. As an example, The Harry Potter film series is still considered an American production despite being almost entirely UK based, because the distributing company is Warner Brothers.
StormFinch t1_iunyiwl wrote
The country where the distributing company is required to report earnings more likely.

Edited for less US centric thought.
Lopsided-Idea3971 t1_iunywuk wrote
Your exactly right and I’m not saying it’s wrong, just for whatever reason never crossed my mind as a horror movie.
StormFinch t1_iuo4jgy wrote
Understandable, it stands apart in that, unlike most of the other horror flicks, it's based around something that could almost be considered mundane. Might also be why it was as popular as it was, it's easier to play upon a fear when it's always possible that that fear could become reality, makes it more visceral. Stephen King's Cujo (the book, not necessarily the film) hit on the same formula.
SardonicSeraphim t1_iuo8n6r wrote
Damn, I am Legend made a lot of money for something so mediocre.
anti_anti_christ t1_iuos0mm wrote
Can't say I saw the directors cut, but yeah, the original ending was just so damn bad that it ruined any momentum the movie had going until that point.
