You are greatly overestimating people’s knowledge of flags here

Yeah and this isnt even a case of correlation with no causation, its just no correlation with no causation

GDP as such (even per capita) does not say much. Better to use PPP to make any such comparisons. A country can be nomally rich while the majority struggles to make a living.

If there’s a point to this it’s lost on me. All I see is a very slight imbalance - slightly fewer men in some poor countries. One richer country has a spike with 25% more men. I don’t readily recognize that flag. Too lazy to look it up.

According to this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_sex_ratio
I think that both these numbers are informed by the same 2013 census info. It seems like there isn't a lot of new data after that. Maybe the country tightened up on releasing records after that due to blowback? Maybe they realized their counting just isn't good and they stopped reporting bad info? Who knows, really.
But that 26% isn't just a population measure, it's straight up birth rate. Sheesh.
The most plausible reasons for such a stunning variance from the norm are:
-
data collection problems (let's all hope for this one -- Lichtenstein is not even 40,000 population, with a birth rate around kind of around 9-11% over the last several years. So.. like 400 babies a year, male/female would be 223/177 in actual numbers. The affect of statistical freaks and reporting error would hit the final number pretty hard)
-
artificial influences. That is, people are having their baby girls aborted more often that their boys. Again, with such a small population, even a few cases would have a big impact on the final numbers.

So are you implying countries with slightly higher ratio of women are poorer?? ..lol
Monochromatic_Kuma t1_ir6m513 wrote
I think it's the opposite, life in poorer countries is more dangerous and millions of years of evolution has made men more prone to risk taking and to protect women.
Having more women doesn't make a country poorer, but being a woman probably helps to survive in a poor country. Forsn't mean her life is better than a man though, only that it may last longer.

She's theoretically right. Male embryos are more likely to abort due to the mother's mental health or stress hormones. So more money could mean less stress, and therefore a more balanced gender ratio
But this graphic isn't helpful at showing this either way lol

Perhaps an interesting dataset. I do not understand the inspiration behind the presentation. Flags outside a select group are not universally or quickly understood. The ratio question is it area is it linear dimension will my brain guess right. My thought plot x-y all countries y axis ratio, x axis income, add a linear fit and look for a trends and outliers like Liechtenstein. Yeah what is going on there. A guess perhaps the country leans conservative and it is obviously rich so young women have the resources to leave to avoid the incels.

I feel like there should be more wealthy nations included here that aren't micronations. Switzerland is the only non-micronation on the 'wealthiest' list.

It’d be helpful to include country name as well as flag in the picture, or to include the flag in the list of countries in the legend. Not everyone knows every flag.
