Which is this wonderful world in which Venezuela has become more democratic? Would very much like to visit it.

In 2021 - 2022?

Well, elections ran in 2021, and they were... not fair, but somewhat less unfair. Indeed, the opposition even won some governorships! That's not to say that Venezuela is a full democracy now or something, but it certainly makes sense that it would move away from authoritarian / move towards democratic.

Look at the disclaimer at the top. Then, ignore the rest.

There should be a similar disclaimer at the top of nearly every political map or chart. Doesn't mean it's useless, it means that the world is a complex and multi-faceted place and disclaimers are a good way of reminding people of that.

Is there a better source for the same concept? (Real question not snippy)

The EIU is pretty good, there's nothing obviously better (that I know of).

Having said that, of course you should be always be aware that every ranking like this will have a degree of bias, as OP reminds us.

Space-Doggity t1_j7qivb1 wrote

Perhaps. At least OP has the courtesy to responsibly state the context as-is. Most don't, and most people don't question it.

Haha cmon, some data source should be checked before visualizing.

I used Mapchart to make the map and used Wikipedia’s article to get the change in score whose source is the EIU’s report.

Edit: Realized I accidentally put “Economic” instead of “Economist” at the top.

Ukraine have war time laws and still democratic. Just as usual such maps show who authors likes or get from whom money.

This map aside, I think Burkina Faso with Traoré leading has better years ahead

there’s not much known about his potential policies tbh, other than the fact that he plans to hold democratic elections in Jul 2024

It is not the score, it is the score’s change since 2021, a country can be democratic but have a decrease in score and remain one.

thatpretzelife t1_j7tgtqf wrote

Yeah it’s cause we were already one of the most democratic countries. It’s just cause our governments done a couple super minor anti-democratic things lately

Do we really have the moral authority to criticize Venezuela’s political system when ours is in a mess? Florida is a typical example. Are you aware of what is going in Florida?

The actual report appears to be behind a PAY WALL so this is useless. Is this some scam to make money?
