They are good guys, when world have shortage of oil and there is a country nearby that is happy to sell it overseas, meh

Well, elections ran in 2021, and they were... not fair, but somewhat less unfair. Indeed, the opposition even won some governorships! That's not to say that Venezuela is a full democracy now or something, but it certainly makes sense that it would move away from authoritarian / move towards democratic.
