The title may seem a little confusing but I’ll explain. I have an interest in playing some fan made games, such as Rock n Roll. Thing is I would like to set up a device with some mainframe like Mame to select and run the game on my television. Does anyone have some background on this or is it even possible. Thanks in advance.

This is all kinds of wrong. Consoles don't work that way. Unless one of them allows for a streaming application to run which would enable you to stream from a running PC elsewhere on your network, it's not possible to run a program written to run on an entirely different OS from the one which runs on the host system. E.g. Playstation 5 does not run Windows, so you can't run Windows applications on a PS5.

Your options are either to connect a PC (or laptop) directly up to your TV, or use a set top box like the Nvidia Shield which does support the use of PC streaming apps like Moonlight to stream content from your PC to your TV (with a very minimal, but sometimes noticable injection of latency.)

Thanks for the feedback. So I guess the best way to describe what I’m aiming to do is say a tv version of a SteamDeck.

You can connect a StreamDeck to your TV. Most handhelds and NUCs use HDMI-out.

Good to know. Maybe that’s the route I need to take. Is it like the Switch where there’s a docking station?

I don’t think what you want to do is doable on a console. Might be better to try something like a raspberrypi?
