Agree this is the best way to look at it, 6 years, 6 years, 7 years, 7 years, I might even push it to 8 years with various cost of living crisis going on round the world, who knows when all will be back to normal... 2027- 2028!

Well, due to the chip shortage PS5 is still scarce out in the market and I think it's the main reason why we still have cross-gen big budget AAA titles despite we're 2 years in to the next gen. Almost every important game both released PS4 and PS5; like GoW: Ragnarök, FFVII:R, The Callisto Protocol, Resident Evil: Village etc. We can't move on and reach the full potential of next gen because of that. The only games I remember in the previous gen that released cross-gen was MGSV:TPP and Persona 5 (I don't count annual titles such as Fifa, PES, AC or CoD because cross-gen is mainly their thing as a tradition).
Hence, this is why I think you're right, we might have a more long lifespan for current gen. We may have PS6 like 2028 or 2029.

They’re on a 5-7 year cycle so 2027-2028 seems likely.

I think in 2023 we will see something like a restyle, whether it is a 'Slim' or 'Pro' version/s.
On the other hand, and by speculating about the release date of PS6, I think 2027 will be the year when the new Sony's console comes.
Let's see, as recessions, sales estimations,... can move the date forward.

i just saw an article a couple of days ago that was talking about Sony 'refreshing' the PS5 , and just having one model that you can put whatever size SSD you want, instead of having the 2 different models. It went on to say something about PS6 in 2028.
I haven't seen anything talking about next gen Xbox.

i couldn't find the article i first saw , but I did a google search for "PS5 new model 2023" and found several articles talking about the new model. I misunderstood , and now see that they are saying they are not sure if the new PS5 will be a PS5 Pro or not, but Sony wants to streamline production, and all new PS5's will be digital, but you can buy a detachable disc drive for it if you want to play physical media games. I didn't see anything else in those articles talking about when the PS6 might come out, but it seems like the original article i saw talked about 2028.

I saw an article from 17 hours ago talking about the detachable disc drive. If that is the case, I am glad I snagged the PS5 disc version.

Who honestly cares at this point? Are you really bored with PS5/Sx already? If you need your game tech to move that fast then move to PC.
Personally I hate the midgen refreshes and the Pro/X upgrades from the last gen. I get that both machines were underpowered at the start of the last gen, they advertised 4k gaming etc but couldn't actually manage it, hence the Pro/X upgrades. We do not have that issue this time.

It isn’t out of the realm of possibility they’ll never be released. Consoles are getting powerful enough/close to powerful enough to achieve graphics photorealism and physics realism that a successor console would provide only marginal enhancements at high cost.

Maybe it'll be less about adding power and more about making a more efficient machine. We've already seen new-gen consoles struggle with Ray tracing at 60fps. Maybe it'll be like the jump between HDD and SSD, the components will interact with each other faster for a smoother experience.
