“Art”

Now go get it appraised so it can be “donated” for a trillion billion tree fifty’s.

Idiots.

Edit: typo and clarity.

For the down voters… if you walked past this piece of bronze hunk of metal, would you think MLK?

Be honest with yourself.

Art has been used to funnel and wash money for decades. The city paid 10 million dollars for that "statue", go look who got those 10 million and look where that money will end up. They will end up donating a large portion of it to people and NGOs close to Democrats. Using tax payer money to directly fund partisan orgs and individuals.

Is the quoted cousin the same Seneca Scott that ran for Oakland mayor this year? If so, that guy is a character; has a gun charge for chasing down two crackheads stealing his water heater, amongst other colorful history.

If you saw the Statue of Liberty would you think "welcome immigrants"? If you saw the Washington Monument, would you think "George Washington was a pretty cool president"?

It's art. You can enjoy it for the art itself and you can enjoy it for the story it tells. It's up to you, not the artist.

Grid1ess t1_j4ihpg9 wrote

It’s “Art” is too commonly used these days, IMO

However, the Statue of Liberty isn’t a real person.

The Washington monument doesn’t have human features and isn’t meant to look like a person, but a tribute. Not sure why I would think he is a pretty cool President seeing as I’ve never personally met the guy tho…

Point is, this cost $10 million dollars to make.

How much of that is in raw bronze? How much to transport it to artist and to display location?

How much did it cost to pay for the building it was housed in before being delivered?

Etc, etc…

Then let’s figure out why this thing cost $10m dollars.

Edit: typo and clarity.

Moreover, how much would you pay to see this statute if it wasn’t displayed in public?

These are good examples because those things also look like hands holding a giant turd or horse penis.

Art is not sacrosanct and neither are artists. Art can be bad. It can resemble things its not supposed to and can have unintended interpretations. Art can be amazing, it can also be trash.

This is a $10 million dollar piece of art that many feel resembles hands holding a turd. That POV has garnered national attention because that POV is not uncommon.

Art can be trash. That's statue is trash.

It’s like the people in charge said “how can we line our pockets without making it seem like we’re stealing?”

The answer is corruption and pocketing the funds by money laundering through an ugly statue that “costs” 10mil

Edit: I hope this monstrosity wasn’t made with tax payer funds

Melt that bronze down and try again… maybe with the peoples’ input this time.

Mock some designs. Get the people invested in it too!

Hell, it’s probably some of their money in that $10m being spent anyways. Lol

Fucking hell! I'm an artist too, but that's way too much.

We have more colleges per capita than any city in the US -- why not have a student design an MLK statue as their doctorate or something? King was only 6 months out of school when he led the Montgomery bus boycott, having a student design a statue of him would be appropriate. Plus, the only way a student's project would come out looking like a dick is on purpose.

Don’t wanna steal any thunder…

Edit:

Also, I’m in the art is for laundering side just in case. Lol

You replying off me is confusing me.

The city paid $0 for the sculpture, it was gifted to the city by Embrace Boston. Try reading up on it before having a meltdown in the comments.

Yes, 10 million that was donated by private individuals to a private organization. It was not 10 million of tax payer money.

Do you understand the difference?

> Keep shilling for politicians

What politicians were involved and in what way? Be specific.

Everyone should go see the statue in person. Then look at it from behind. Then report back.

Cameron_james t1_j4j8444 wrote

But you only know those things because you read and learned about them. You learned what an obelisk was (and it's historical significance) and what it says on the statue's plaque. You can't read the plaque from standing at the base or a ferry ride.

thanks for clearing that up. i think he has some valid points about the statue and the performative nature around it (or most any MLK celebrations). but I just get so annoyed when people use “woke” these days. sometimes I think I’m too online for my own good

Oh they used the word "woke" in the title so you think it must be biased and fake news. Nevermind that the King family is the source for the news, and people all over the world agree. Yea, you do you.

I think it looks stupid -- but I don't really get the point of complaining. Art is subjective, I can't really blame whoever approved this for having different taste from me. If you believe in public art you will just have to accept that you won't like some of it. Personally, I don't think the city should spend $10,000,000 on any statue.

That doesnt tell you if city put money into it it shows a 1 mil donation. I dont care either way the govt wastes way more on way less. Im simply saying no one so far has produced financials beyond newspaper articles that dont break it down. So to say its all donations wouldnt be correct
