Refraction caused by drastically different air and water temperatures can allow seeing objects not usually visible due to the curvature of the earth. For example, from time to time Toronto becomes visible from NY state: http://spacewatchtower.blogspot.com/2018/03/photo-rare-phenomenon-toronto-skyline.html
