Hyde Park or Dorchester/Mattapan near Blue Hill Ave

There's this hole around port norfolk/Pope's Hill in Dorchester.

It's like, a mile to north Quincy, a mile to Ashmont, a mile to Shawmut, a mile to fields corner. It's so stupid.

The 201/202 is a bus that loops from fields corner, one that loops going Adams St first, and one that loops going Neponset first, so they go in different directions. But the neponeset one stops at 6pm. And after that the Adams bus runs once an hour. And that's if the bus shows up in the first place, cause there's times on schedule the bus never shows.

The 210 is supposed to run from Quincy to fields corner. But it can turn around at any random Quincy station. Weekends it doesn't go to Quincy. And it stops running early.

These bus run so sporadically. They don't come often. Most people gave up and walk to a station, keep an eye out for a passing bus on the way, and a bus never shows.

While 'technically' a bus runs into the neighborhood, it feels like it's only a technicality at this point. They run the midday busses for the kids getting out of 3 elementary schools, and that's their concern.

I have been known to drive to north Quincy and park there so I can drive home - cause after 6pm fuck getting a bus home.

Do I want to walk a mile thru Dorchester after dark alone? Not particularly. Do I want to wait an hour for a bus? Not particularly.

My suspicion has always been that this must be somewhat intentional. That somehow this part of Dorchester pushed back against the T at some point long ago (this is my complete guess)

We've been actively fighting FOR the T. We've had discussions with the city about it.

Currently it looks like we're caught in a catch-22 situation that's causing a downward spiral.

Something happened and the schedule changed, got cut back a little but. There was less ridership. Schedule got cut back more cause there was less ridership. Less people took the T cause the schedule changed. Schedule got cut back more cause less people took the T. Ad nauseum forever.

Some grad student at UMB who lived in the neighborhood did a whole study on it and submitted it to the T. The T came out and did interviews about the problem.

NOTHING CHANGED.

It's not all of these as half of Dorchester actually has red line. Ashmont to South Station is usually less than twenty minutes.

The entirety of Mattapan relies on one bus line. Our the southern most part which has trolly access. The other half of Dorchester relies on commuter rail.

Roslindale is also pretty boned.

Roslindale isn’t that bad considering there’s a bunch of bus lines going from the square to Forest Hills plus the commuter rail. Not nearly as fucked as Mattapan and most of BHA

The bus is the part that sucks because you're guaranteed a line change. It also multiplies risk factor because there's more things that can go wrong.

I guess it's more about expectations.

Yeah.. but the amount of times the Red Line is down because a switch isn't working at JFK, medical emergency, someone got hit by a train, or it has to go 1 MPH because of weather.. etc. Yes, it is the worst.

RogueInteger t1_j1aw6iu wrote

Yeah all the lines suck. But imagine waiting for a bus that's delayed for 20 minutes to then waiting for a train delayed 20 more minutes

West west Roxbury, might be a bus out there.

Also, depends on where you are trying to get to. Cross town is hard from Boston to Cambridge on the T, JP to Cambridge is in then out for an hour plus vs biking for 20 minutes.

And the #37 bus is being terminated (Baker & Vermont). They are moving the #52 from Baker St to capture the B&V streets. So no more 1-seat ride to Forest hills for those people.

Quincyperson t1_j19w9wc wrote

That was an ass sucking one seat ride, too. The commuter rail was great except that it only runs hourly. An Orange Line extension to WR or HP just seems like a no brainer.

7

ppomeroy t1_j1b39qo wrote

Too complicated to get into here and off topic but those extensions were attempted back in the 80s and will not happen. Don't believe any city plan that suggests that. It's lip service. Great idea, wish it would, but will not happen.

Southie east of Dot Ave. Chelsea just purely due to its proximity to the downtown and total lack of rapid transit. (I know “cHeLsEa iSn’t BoStoN” but it’s Suffolk county and more relevant than the western Boston neighborhoods).

Chelsea has a commuter rail stop, the 111 to haymarket, the SL3 to south station, and the 116/117 to maverick

djohnstonb t1_j1blrqt wrote

Don't forget the 112 to either Wellington or Wood Island, which is becoming the 114 and set to run every 15 minutes.

Not the worst imo but at least deserves to be in the conversation. For just how many pedestrian-friendly businesses there are in Seaport, it sure has some of the worst public transport access amongst "major" areas in Boston.

The fringes of Hyde Park or West Roxbury.

Miles from the subway and/or commuter rail; and very few buses.

straycatbri t1_j1ay4qx wrote

west roxbury is really whacky. i live near the border of it, and even though we have a few buses that run to Forest hills that's kind of the most. trying to catch the 51 to resevoir to connect to the greenline sucks, as it only runs once an hour most of the time, and you have to walk to roslindale.

my main complaint is its really fucking hard to get a CharlieCard in West Rox. i heard that any star market/ 7-11 lets you get and charge a charliecard, so i went to both of those places and they both gave me a "no sorry", and a "...no?". the only place you can get one is the BPL branch and you can't charge it there.

for a town close to Boston it seems like they don't want you to have a charliecard. ive even seen waltham have more stores that offer to sell you one.

Ok_Olive9438 t1_j1bz9eb wrote

A lot depends on where you need to go. It's relatively easy to get to downtown from most places, but it can take an absurd amount of time to get say, from some parts of the North Shore to Cambridge, because you have to go in through the city center and back "out" again, there are few direct routes unless you drive, and taking multiple buses is not just slow, but playing with fate.
