How much do y’all use in a month? I know the prices are crazy right now, but I feel like something is wrong considering how much I have “used” in only a month and a half.

Depending on how cold it is you can use a few hundred gallons a month. Also depends on the insulation.

Essentially the only places that have oil in Boston are old. The old places have shit insulation.

This right here. Whatever you think you should be using is almost certainly WAY less than what you'll actually use. Oil heat is stupid expensive.

Most homes in the northeast use between 500-700 gallons per year. During cold snaps/peak winter months it's not uncommon to use 100-150+ gallons in a month for a 1500-2000/sqft house.

All this depends on insulation, how you set your thermostat, etc ymmv

This makes me feel mildly better. But this $500 a month bill is quite alarming…

If you're new to oil, I'd look at getting on a budget plan, then you pay monthly into an account and draw it down over the year to avoid the spikes. Prices are high across all types of energy due to Russia unfortunately but are lower than they have been over the past few months.

If you want to nerd out on the data, this is the wholesale price for heating oil over time.

You are nice! I’m not new to oil. Just new to paying for it without a roommate. It’s just hitting harder than I thought I would. Thank you for the info that I probably won’t understand lol

My house is really small and the thermostat has been set at 65 since 11/4 or thereabouts. You also might have someone that regularly takes really long showers. I definitely suggest calling Mass Save if you haven't yet though. Insulation should help.
