i am starting a job 5:30pm-12am (and have to close the store). i thought the subway ran more frequently into the night. i feel like the green line stopping at 12:47am is so early?? especially on a weekend? is this normal?

i’ve thought of a bike, but with winter coming i’m not sure. i really don’t know how long it’ll take to close the store, hopefully not 45 minutes but who knows.

what are other means of travel? i just moved to boston si i don’t know all of my options. i’d rather not uber because then that’s the point of working. i have to travel 1.5 miles and i’m a female.

Yeah, the T stops around midnight. They've tried twice to extend hours past midnight, but apparently they deemed it not worth the costs.

Biking at night/after rush hour is kind of nice, in my opinion. There are fewer cars on the road. You just need to make sure you have lights so that you are visible to the cars and other people on the road. Cold is also a valid concern, but 1.5 miles is about ~10 minutes of riding, which isn't that bad.

i’m not too worried about the cold or cars since it’s after midnight. i’m more worried about snow? this will be my first winter in boston and live downtown so idk how the roads are?

Roads are generally ok unless it’s, like, serious snowstorm territory. If you purchase a bike with winter roads in mind you should be ok in all but the worst conditions. On those occasions, probably worth the Uber.

good to know! thank you.

i’ll definitely uber when needed for safety, of course.

1.5 miles is really just a 30-40 minute walk. I would bike most days but if it becomes too bad to bike due to ice then I would walk it. It is far cheaper than Uber and most areas of the city are more than walkable for all genders.

Honestly even snow isn't that bad. Bike tires, especially the ones on "hybrid" commuter bikes, cut through the snow pretty well. The real worry is that it freezes over and you can't see the ice.

In the coldest months I used to bike in full ski gear with rain pants rather than snow pants(easier to deal with around the gears but almost just as warm).

If it had just recently snowed or sleeted then I would take the full lane rather than be anywhere near the side of the road. Generally bike planes are entirely impassable once the plowing starts. That is where they dump all the snow so you will be taking the full lane anyway.

that’s what i’m mostly nervous about is the ice and or slush. i’m not too far, but i will have to cut through boston commons which i’m not sure is just worth going around if i’m nervous about ice

I don’t know how long it takes you to close the store, but I’d recommend starting the process earlier so you can be out by 12:30 and make the last train. This is what a pretty much everyone has to do.

Check local bus schedules as well, some might run a little later.

Several years ago, we did experiment with late-night T and Bus Service but there wasn’t enough demand to justify it. There was big backlash when they removed it, particularly from workers like yourself and hospital workers. Maybe it’ll come back with a new GM, I think extending T service by just an hour would be really useful.

Biking is fine, people do bike in the winter. Get special tires for the snow and ice tho.

Otherwise, if you don’t have a car - your options are Uber or walk. Or request a different shift.

The other question is where are you catching the train from? The times listed in the schedules are the times the last train leaves the starting point. Depending on where you are on the line you could theoretically have another 20-30 minutes to catch the last train.

oh….rip. i need to catch the green line train at copley

You should be in good shape. Using the times on Google Maps the last trains leave Copley in either direction between roughly 1250 and 1 depending on which branch of the green line you need. Unless you're needing to stay well past closing time you should be fine.

Other than a brief period of time in 2015-16 where they piloted late night weekend service, the T has always ended between 12:30-1am in the 20 years that I've lived in Boston.

Where do you need to travel from/to?

You're fine. You have all 4 branches of the green line you can take. The last B line leaves BC at 12:17am, the last C leaves Cleveland Circle at 12:21am, the last D leaves Riverside at 12:04am and the last E line doesn't leave Heath St until 12:47am so it will be after 1am by the time it gets to Copley.
