I have been an RCN customer for the past 2+ years. I'm paying $75/mo for 100 Mbps
Just looking at new customer deals, I feel I'm getting fleeced here

Yep, realizing that now. Used to be $30/mo, then 50 and now it looks like they increased the plan by another 20 in the last couple of months. Serves me right for not keeping track of my bills
In what dimension?
We pay significantly more for only 300 and the up speed is something trash like 25.
Edit: how many of you are also paying for cable and are looking at the internet part of the package? Those aren't the prices if you don't also bundle cable.
most of us cut the cord over 5 years ago and haven't needed cable since
Then 75 dollars for internet in Boston is a deal.

Switching to become a new customer is $30 dollars. Xfinity is offering 2 years at that price with a one year contract. You don't even need to completely cancel and live without internet for a week. Set the disconnect date a month out and they will call you back in a few days to see if they can get you back.
Currently $30/month for 200mbps down/100 up on starry. Was 100/10 on comcast before at $40
Also RCN for 2+ years, little under $70 for gig speed
basically im paying same for 10th of the speed 😭
how did you get that plan?
When I signed up in 2020 I had gig speed for $45 with the new customer discount. After year 1 they tried to raise it on me and I went back and forth with them until I said I wanted to file a complaint and then they let me stay at $45 for another year. After that expired it jumped up to about $70 and I just chose not to fight them this time around
I might have to fight on this one
26 a month RCN. They tried to up me to 80 after a year with all this BS about equipment fees etc. had to call 5 times telling them I was going to cancel each time coming down a few dollars, until they gave me the original offer. The song and dance is annoying just be firm.
Sad part is, I own my own modem & router. I tried multiple agents but its useless. Just thinking of switching
The equipment is irrelevant they say that and lie about why the price is what it is. What you need to say is very firmly “I would like the original offer of 26 a month” they’ll tell you they can’t do that just keep repeating it calmly eventually they’ll talk to their supervisor and give it to you, they can’t hang up.
I see I have to channel my Karen energy on this one and ask to talk to the manager 😂
When I had 50 Mbps I called up RCN to ask why my bill had gone up $10. They lowered my bill $10 and increased my speed to 155 Mbps. I didn't even complain or ask for anything. Sounds like it's not quite as easy these days, but it never hurts to call them. If they don't offer, just ask.
I just got off a call with them, and they refused to budge. Offered like $9 lower for same speed. I'm seriously considering switching to Comcast or Starry
Call back again. You probably got a sour agent.
Comcast is nothing better, I never tried Starry but hear it’s slow and data caps.
Check out T-Mobile 5G. If it’s not available at you current address try using a friends address. It’s autopay so no real issues. $49.99, it is 2year contract tho
Starry isn't slow, and there is no data cap.
I tried chat, calls & social media but not much.
I have used Starry in the past. It's similar to T-mo's 5G setup. Doesn't look great when compared to Comcast advertised speeds, but they offer close to what they promise. It sucks sometimes during bad weather. They say they started in Boston because windy weather helps them figure out how to improve those weather issues
Xfinity works great, just make sure to purchase an adaquate speed. 99% of issues people have with ISPs is their own fucking fault, I.e. why do I have lag with 15 devices all streaming Netflix on the cheapest per month plan.
I pay $79.99 for 1 gig down (get 1400 Mbps or 1.4Gbps), 40 Mbps up. I recommend your own router and modem, the Xfinity ones tend to be a bit garbage wifi wise, they work fine for Ethernet though.
Crapmobile 5g that doesn't work through a concrete wall over 3 ms ping 1400 Mbps down Xfinity for $80/m? What are you smoking, can I get some?
I would probably just take the $9 discount. That's not bad, and you probably don't need faster speeds. If you want a better deal, apparently you have to actually schedule a disconnect and someone from customer retention will reach out in a few business days. Otherwise you can switch between Comcast and RCN every couple years. I've had Comcast before though, and they raised prices more than RCN does. Good luck!
I already asked them to disconnect, and don't foresee a better deal. I think I would rather switch to Starry which offers good service and would still save
The devil that is Comcast, does offer a better deal though...it's so tempting
I switched to Starry from RCN and never regretted it.
I was an RCN customer about 3 years ago. I called to cancel the service because at the time, Verizon was offering a low cost deal. Several days after the RCN cancel call, I received a call from RCN: "This is Vice-President (or something similar) So-and-So. We really want to keep you as a customer. Isn't there anything we can do to keep you?". I wanted to say, "Yes, you could offer me a lower price deal than what I'm paying you now." But I didn't. Am currently using RCN again, at a much lower cost than Verizon. So, you might want to call one more time next week (after the holiday and the weekend) and just say "I'd like to remain a customer but I've done a lot of research and I know many other RCN customers in my area have much better deals in terms of cost/speed".
On the phone, actually say you want to cancel, pick a cancellation date a couple weeks in the future. They’ll call or email you in a week or so and offer a deal. I’ve done this twice with RCN
Comcast works absolutely fine. Only non tech people have issues with them for obvious reasons.
They used to be much more scammy with fees and raising rates, and their service used to be worse. And if you ever need a tech to come out it was a huge pain. But they've gotten better, I've used them for like 17yrs and lately I think they're pretty solid, with fair prices, good perks and decent customer service
[deleted]
Call and say you are switching. You will be sent to retention who is authorized to change costs and plans. If they don’t budge switch.
$30/month for Starry. 200mbps/100mbps down. Haven’t had any issues. Great experience
I requested/had everyone in the condo association that im apart of request starry (you can do it on their website). 4 months later they came and gave our association access. Love the company constantly 200mbs and it’s just $30 a month
I second starry and will sing it's praises forever. Switched two years ago from RCN and am happy every day. Price stays $30, their modem works well, internet has never gone out, I don't game or anything but it's fast enough for anything I do and all my devices to be using it. The two times I had to contact customer service (in the beginning and to get a detailed bill), they responded immediately and resolved everything so quickly and easily. 10/10 so far
Same. Very few problems
How did you manage to get that deal?
It’s a relatively new technology Starry is using and is thus not available everywhere around the city (i think). They were just advertising around my apartment complex and I figured I’d try it out
Makes sense. Those guys are great. Roll in with free pizza & cookies...I don't think my apt will see the intro promo again
How is everyone in this thread paying only $30 for Starry? I’m paying $50.
RCN, $35, 300 mbps
Did you sign up recently? That's a good deal
Nope! I’ve been with RCN since 2019 at my current address and I just call when the rate goes up and ask for a lower rate.
Nice. I am trying that but not getting much traction 🙁
Do you have a roommate or SO that could sign up for service at the same address to get the new rate?
Nah, I think my only option is to switch providers, which means choosing between Comcast & Starry
Fios? I'd schedule something with Comcast (check online for special rates, free installation, etc.) and then call to cancel RCN for that date and see if they come back with a better deal.
Since RCN became Astound(?) the customer service has gotten worse but it's still the best value around.
FIOS isn't available in my area unfortunately. Looks like I'm eligible for Comcast black friday deal. RCN offered like $5 discount, so just asked them to cancel
Comcast is better than it used to be for sure
$49/mo for Verizon Fios 1Gbps symmetrical with First Responder Discount and using my own router.
Which router are you using? Browsing through black friday deals to see if I can nab a deal on one
I use an older model Unifi router. The Verizon ONT unit (usually installed where Verizon enters the home) outputs to an Ethernet cable so any router should work so you’re not stuck paying for the ridiculous “Quantum Gateway”rental.
If I was shopping these days, I’d be looking at Wi-Fi 6e as it’s stupid fast and is built to handle tons of devices and interference: https://slickdeals.net/newsearch.php?q=6e+router&searcharea=deals&searchin=first
Interesting. Do they charge for ONT? My current router works fine and supports up to 300 Mbps
I don’t think so. I’m certainly not paying for it.
Here’s a photo of an ONT and power supply for reference: https://forums.verizon.com/t5/image/serverpage/image-id/18337iD83570BD590A9D88/image-size/large?v=1.0&px=999
Thanks!
$140 for ~400mbps.
Comcast.
Because there are no other options at my address.
[deleted]
Yup. Something like $104 last I checked.
This is closer to what we're paying and I just checked to confirm RCN doesn't cover here.
Verizon has coverage for like 8 apartments in my building, mine excluded. T-Mobile 5G is an option, but judging by the 5G speeds on my T-Mobile phone it’ll be sub 100mbps and that’s just stupid.
I also have T-Mobile for cell phones and it is not great. I definitely wouldn't use it for home internet.

My son just switched from RCN to Comcast due to a price jump. He locked in 200mbps internet for two years at $30 per month. He's thrilled
I'm thinking of doing the same, just a bit nervous since it's comcast 🤷
I've had Comcast for years now. $39.99/month for 200mbps. Just the same reliability and service I had with RCN prior.
$15 Verizon FiOS. 300 Mbps bi directional.
Wow that's cheap. Do you also have a cellphone plan with them?
I do, and have my own equipment. So I dont pay for that awful router/wap.
That adds up. It's good they offer 10 year lock on their plans. I'm considering switching but without a 5G plan its $50/mo
That's including a router. Just buy a router. They charge you $18 a month for it. Also 50 is still cheaper than most if not all.
Yeah, much cheaper and 3x faster than what I'm paying
10 Year?????
yep, that's what it says on their site at least. would have signed up if they were available in my area
Jesus you need to get that changed. Around $30 for 300 here. Call and ask and if they don’t budge and sign up again under someone else’s name. It takes no time to connect if you own your modem and you’ll save a ton.
https://old.reddit.com/r/boston/comments/xxz1hm/what_are_people_actually_paying_for_rcnastound
Yep,. fixing it now. I live by myself but definitely can switch to either Comcast or Starry
Comcast - 400 Mbps @ $30/mo for 2 years Starry - 200 Mbps @ $50/mo
Comcast sucks.. if you know which cable in your house goes to comcast you could do it for a month or keep RCN alive while they send a tech out but ensure you know which cable does RCN so you can switch back a month later and not support comcast since you have a choice.
I don't, there are like 3 coax outlets. I can go with Starry too, bit more expensive but I liked their service
Worst case try out starry. Other threads have indicated some congestion post covid but good to support them.
Comcast is fine now. They are all the same. I had RCN prior and Comcast is identical
$50/month for Gigabit through netBlazr, outside of bad snow storms I have zero complaints.
I pay $80 a month for Verizon gigabit speed. No cable, but I think I do get a discount because my cell is Verizon too.
$40/m for 300 MBps - Netblazr. Used to pay $60/m for gigabit but I don't need it.
In a Town that services RCN and Comcast. My previous residence in same town, I choose RCN, I loved it. It was 1Gps and stayed that speed all the time, seldom went down (maybe twice a year, no more than 10min). I believe is was $29.99mo owned my own equipment.
Then moved to this new place that is almost spot across the street from RCN office yet my building is not wired for it. I had to take Comcast. They super stink. Payed $39.99 for 200mb and just dealt with it. The service would drop several times a month and I’d get text about 2hrs of disruption, only for it to last up to 2days. I canceled service with them in July but after a week of no home Wi-Fi, I and my partner agreed to put it back on. Only now same tier 200Mps $49.99. I figured if I’m going to spend that much, pay +$10 for the 600Mps. Guess what? It still stunk…..
Last month I had enough and called T-Mobile (I use mint mobile for phone and I know the signal here is great as they use the same towers) they did not offer the 5g home internet at my exact residence but I used an address of a friend next town over to get the stuff. I plugged it in by my window and just like that, 5G with a solid excellent connection. It delivers 200mps via Ethernet and 150mps on Wi-Fi, it handles 4K streams no issues. I will say the connection does slow down durning peak time thru the day, and the modem will get hot and get disconnected (once w eek so far). I solved a lot of this by putting the Modem up in a higher window, and connect to a stand alone router. Since then my connection is more solid (better ping too 26ms) and the modem doesn’t heat up as much I think due to lack of connected Wi-Fi devices.
I pay $49.99 for it. It’s not as good as the RCN I once had and loved, but I hate comcast and I’m willing to support this new 5G thing in hopes that it can get better and will provide better market choices for consumers. Also I got the car Wi-Fi thing, they tossed it in for free and only pay $10mo and now I can stream Spotify in my car without using my phone at all. I’m exited to go on a camping trip and take this equipment with me and see how it does.
I will say RCN is very good in this area. Call them if you have service or billing issues. They have great customer support. Comcast can go suck it. I’m giving T-mo a solid thumbs up for now. I know this is new stuff for them so I’m willing to take the bumps in the road.
Yeah, I'm really wary of Comcast where their advertisement is better than actual service. I'll look into T-mo but that 2 year contract seems sus. I would rather go with a flat rate plan Starry offers
Verizon 80$ a month 900 down 800 up. Roughly
$50 for 300 mbps, including router thingy
Starry?
comcast
This is bonkers cheap to me.
I thing we are $300 a year or so for 150Mbps
Wow, you have it worse than me. Is your current ISP the only option in your area?
No. My town has municipal power, water and broadband. If you bundle you get a discount and I haven’t had any issues with any of them
Ahh. It's 6x expensive compared to Starry, but I guess bundling might make it worth it
I need to double check the price but I’m pretty sure it’s $300 a year
Oh my b, I read it as 300/mo. It's cheap af. That's a great deal
Oh 😂😂
you have to call and bitch to RCN every 2 years.. I have 100?200? i forget, but the lowest tier ~$30-40/ month
If you do a lot of gaming and video calling, Verizon FiOS is your best option, even for a lower rated speed than the competition. They have MUCH butter upload speeds. Their service is symmetrical, meaning the upload speed is the same as download speed.
Would have preferred it, but unfortunately not available in my area
I pay 79 for gig speed thru Xfinity and I’m very happy with it.
Yep same here. Xfinity router doesn't support the full speed though! You need a modem with a 2.5g port and a router with preferably 2 or more 2.5g ports if you want to get all 1400 Mbps. The ports on the Xfinity one cap out at 1000.
$40 for 400mbps Comcast
With RCN you have to threaten to cancel etc like everyone else has said.
I’m 4 years into my contract, rent their modem and a whole EERO mesh network, get 250Mbps and pay 88.
I stopped fighting the increases at some point. It used to be cheaper.
Maybe if you buy your own equipment it can get cheaper. Black Friday and Cyber Monday is the perfect time to look into it
I WFH so I rent the modem in case there's an issue, RCN will come fix it or bring me a new one. Work pays about half of the total cost of around $80.00. I think I have 100mps.
Verizon $90 for 1gig plus a router/modem whatever.
Xfinity 400 mbps for about $40
$39.99/month. Verizon fios. I think it’s 200Mbps.
I was paying the same except now its 300 and they did not bother to to tell me its 300. Cool stuff.
I also had 200 and went to 300. The way I understand it is your line is already provisioned for 300/300, so it costs them nothing to "unlock" it. They offer this as an upgrade in the online portal and do it to throw you a bone if you are calling to negotiate price.
I'm on FIOS 75/75 for $40/month with my own router.
But they won't upgrade my speed even though they give everyone else 300/300 for the same price and they already upgraded my ONT to a newer one (when the older one died).
It is a knife to the belly knowing that they are giving me 25% of the speeds of others for the same price.
I mean, ya you should be getting higher mbps for that price.
But in reality, the difference between 100 Mbps vs 1 Gbps won't be noticeable to most people.
RCN: 1.2Gbps $60. I signed up a few months ago, so i still haven't gone through the dance of calling them.
Also RCN, we pay about $60 for 500 Mbps. We've been customers for just over 2 years and when our rates go up my partner calls and asks for either a lower rate or faster speeds. I think we started at the 100 Mbps tier for $30ish.
75 for RCN, 1.2 down 50 up and a static IP

Always live chat them about ongoing promotions, and just keep doing that after your promo expires. Easiest way to get low rate high speeds.
I have Netblazr, pay $60/mo for symmetrical 300 Mbps up/down. Heard of others having issues with reliability during inclement weather, but have been lucky enough to only experience that once in 6 years during a major snowstorm.
[removed]
RCN, 100mps for $182 (with minimal tv package that's pretty much 2-4-5-7-25 and $22 for HBO). It's a scam how much they arbitrarily jack up prices with no increase in service. Started at like $75/mo a few years ago.
RCN here too pay like $50 for half a gig.
[removed]
39.99 for 200mbps
$75 is a lot per month but the speed is more than enough for someone who just uses it for streaming/working from home.
T Mobile will be $50 for comparable speed, and likely Comcast on a promo deal which you can just call and cancel at the end and they'll extend the promo another year.
940/880 mbps. Verizon Fios in Medford. $72.99. RCN sucks, and so does comcast. If you are getting Starry in your neighborhood, absolutely get that.

$75/mo for 100Mbps? Dude, you are not getting fleeced. You are getting double fisted.
I pay $79 for 1Gig
