Actually living in the city and street parking regularly (as I and my wife did for quite a few years), I'd see situations like that u/BikeIsKing describes regularly. Enough to know that if I see weird/obnoxious parking spacing, I safely bet on it being due to the vagaries of people leaving and arriving at different times leaving the awkward gaps.

Dollars to donuts this person squeezed into a spot and someone in front of them left before OP arrived. They also said they had 2 feet of space behind them, which is a luxury when street parking here, and plenty of room to get out.
