For some reason I remembered a story just now while I was in the shower an thought a few of you might get a kick out of it - I was at a nationals game in dc like 12 years ago with my folks, my sis, and brother in law who is from dc. I was getting drunk of course an I guess a little too excited an was swearing like a truck driver. My BIL got wicked pissed an was like “ dude keep it down this isn’t Fenway alright”. Always thought it was hilarious. Dunno why I remembered it or why I felt the need to share, but here we are. Anyway have a good day everyone.

I just came back from Seoul and it's wild to see how big of a difference their transit is compared to ours (or anywhere else in the US really).

  1. Barely any delays, and if there are it's always <5 minutes and updates accurately on the app. The app also tells you exactly which door to get on for the quickest exit or transfer. Trains are usually 5 minutes apart.

  2. All the stations and trains I visited were IMMACULATE, restrooms included – and none of them smelled like urine. During non-peak times there's usually an attendant that's sweeping the train cars.

  3. They have a looping line that circles Seoul and connects with all the other lines for easy transfer. Going from one end to the city to the other is a breeze due to how many transfer options there are. Busses are also plenty and incredibly reliable.

Only downside is that you can only pay in cash to reload the fare card but that's it. God the MBTA is such a dumpster fire in comparison.

Until the T gets enough rail dispatchers, it's likely to continue. They have yet to commit to when that will be AFAIK.

It takes a Braintree train about 110 minutes to do a full loop. An Ashmont train could do it in 95 but to stay intermixed they also take 110 minutes. 17 red line trains show up on the tracker right now. That means that at best there is one train every 6.5 minutes.

The reason it often takes longer is because the trains are not spaced out evenly. All the MBTA has to do is keep trains 6.5 minutes apart which requires more synchronization between trains than just running each individual train as fast as possible only held back by the train in front. It's implemented in other major cities with a functioning metro system.

What's wrong with a delay over 10 minutes if they come every 10 minutes? When you walk up isn't that just a 4 minute delay still? I never got that

I had a Walgreens appointment to get a booster yesterday. Had to take an Uber and pto from work to go to it. I got there on time and they turned me away because their computers “were down”. 😑

Had to leave my house much later than usual this morning and was shocked at the traffic situation. Literally took me twenty minutes to get from near the corner of Brighton and Harvard to the Pike eastbound ramp. You guys put up with this daily?

Easiest way to move city-to-city? Renting an SUV and stuffing it with boxes the best I can seems the best bet. Any one-way rental car recs?

Easiest? Get movers. Cheapest? One-way car rentals typically add a cost per mile so driving back may save costs. U-Haul always has a mileage fee.

A minivan fits a lot more than an SUV.

I am a new student at Northeastern University.

Currently I live on Mozart Street in Jamica Plain. Is it a safe area? And how about the stop and shop around there? I have heard that Jackson Square isn't safe because its adjacent to a public housing project that has a bad reputation for being a dangerous spot, which is why for commute I take the bus from Perkins Street.

Why inconvenience yourself just based off of what you heard? Taking the train from Jackson to Ruggles will be fine. Yes there is a housing project, but the chances of you randomly getting jumped in the middle of the afternoon are slim to none. Live your life, explore the neighborhood. JP has a lot of great parts about it.

It's not the most safe area but 99/100 times you'll be totally fine. If I were you I would take the orange line from Jackson square to ruggles.

Your personal safety depends on if you're alone and the time of day, but generally I think you'd be fine unless it's 2am and you're by yourself there's a tiny chance you could get spooked

99/100 is pretty accurate, so about 3/4 “questionable encounters” a year.

I was asking because I had a bad incident near the blue bike stand between Bromley Heath and Jackson Square station - a guy from that project racially abused and punched me below the ear near the blue bike stand there at 6:30pm on a Sunday

Maybe it was a one-off incident, that too maybe because it was near Bromley Heath. But I always want to ask about a place's safety now before I venture out alone
