Similar pedantic offenses are if you stay "in Cape Cod" or "in Martha's Vineyard." The correct preposition for both is on.

Excuse me there tourist, you must not be familiar with the bay state of Massachusetts. It is actually "on Cape Cod," not "in Cape Cod." Please enjoy this map that we found to help you out.
