I think people slow down because they believe they can get ticketed for speeding. I actually try to accelerate faster :)

You don't have to slow down for anything on the pike. Not traffic, not emergency services, full send baby!

They definitely aren't!

A few years ago I was driving up to Boston on July 4th and there was no one else on the road except some jackass in a Nissan SUV with NY plates who would accelerate to 90 whenever I tried to pass and then SLAM on the brakes every time he saw a toll transponder. At least he was predictable, as far as brake checks go.

The Hampton Tolls has two barrier-separated lanes for Fastpass. No slowing needed.

There are about 8 other manned toll booths. Some of which allow Fast-Pass. In the summer, traffic is backed up to Salisbury. When you finally get to the tolls, the manned ones are empty. Everyone is slowed down in the "free flowing" fastpass lanes. It's infuriating.

Why they can't just move to a system similar to the Tobin Bridge is beyond me.

even if you slow down they still know you were speeding by timing how long it took you to get from the last toll point to the current one. they dont care....they are not ticketing for it !

I slow down because I have a cousin who was a toll booth worker and was killed by a car speeding through the booth. I won’t stop slowing down, no matter how much it irritates people. Sorry, not sorry.

There are no people manning the toll booths. None. Going from highway speeds to a dead stop at toll plazas is also a safety issue for drivers. Your point about safety makes no sense.

I’ve been told by a guy at massdot that they do collect speed information, but it’s for traffic purposes only. Basically they time how long cars take to get from one toll camera to another, which can pin a speed to a specific license plane, but they don’t keep a record of the license plate numbers after the calculation.
