What’s a nice place to see this / be offline when Reddit thinks China has launched its attack? Maybe somewhere along the Charles.

I always get caught sitting in my office and miss it.

Just speculating but it looks like most game day flyovers come over the Green Monster from the north. If that's the case, I'd say the Mass Ave bridge (southbound side, facing west) is a safe bet for a wide view, but probably not a direct flyover. Along the Esplanade on the BU side near the dock, or MIT side near boathouse / dirt path, could be good spots as well.

I've had mixed results on the Mass Ave bridge in the past. One went right overhead another missed by half a mile.

Does anyone know the flight path?

When I used to live in Allston, I’d hear them fly overhead, about 15-20 seconds before they’d show up on TV.

im pretty sure there parked at Hanscom AFB in Bedford before flying and then will fly direct

3

Whiplash92123 OP t1_jea00gx wrote

They will probably fly directly in from their bases. The F15s are from Western Mass and the 35s are from Burlington, Vermont. Not a long flight time for either of them

BenRed2006 t1_jea3vpp wrote

Ok!

I once flew into Hanscom and saw a couple of F18s supposedly going to Foxboro. I don't know much about military aviation, but it seems more likely they group somewhere, refuel, brief on the mission then fly out together but don't take my word for it

I can definitely see some airframes going there before doing a flyover, but for most stuff it’s squadrons and units somewhat local to New England. Last year was an airframe each from the MA, NH, and VT ANG

Pretty much 0 training value whatsoever.

Pilots have to log a certain number of hours in the seat. And yes, doing a low altitude formation in a metro area is a fine thing to practice. Not every day needs to be advanced combat maneuvers and shit.

ClarkFable t1_jea92qf wrote

>Pilots have to log a certain number of hours in the seat

This doesn't make this "exercise" any less useless in terms of actual training value.

>And yes, doing a low altitude formation in a metro area is a fine thing to practice

It's really not. In fact, it creates unnecessary risk to flyover a densely populated area for no reason other than to perform a low rent (high expense) fireworks show.

Quit while you’re behind. There’s a great video on YT from F-35 pilot Hasard Lee if you want to gain a better understanding of flyovers and how they are helpful in training.

I've seen it. I know the arguments. It's BS marketing for the military and billionaire sports club owners.

People might not be so upset if they didn’t spend the time and money to amplify the jets. They’re loud enough already.

Edit for the dense: the post says "Residents should anticipate the amplified sound of these low-flying aircraft" but means "Residents should anticipate the high amplitude sound of these low-flying aircraft." The former means that something has been done to increase the volume.

Training isn't something you "complete." Pilots never stop training. They're required to have a certain number of hours flight time each year to keep their skills and certifications current.

You've deleted all the other comments where you make this stupid argument, you should go ahead and delete this one too. You're clearly just talking out of your ass.
