I am new to the city, international student. I don't know much about the process. I read I have to do first an online exam of 30$. I do not want to lose the chance and money, but I don't know if I need to study and how much time to dedicate to it.

If anyone has a few minutes to guide me, I will appreciate it.

Thanks

This right here is why we have drivers running over people.

You need to first download the Driver's Manual and read it from the first letter to the last letter. Then go back to the beginning and do it again. Then close it and have someone quiz you. If you fail, go back to step 1.

Overall, you are better off going through a driving school. You will get a reduced insurance rate for having done so, and so it's nearly an even wash in that regard. It is not so bad.

You still have to take the permit test before signing up for driving school

Just read through the driver's manual and make note of any hard numbers that it presents - like blood alcohol level or stopping distance, etc. For the most part the questions on the exam are pretty obvious but they do throw in a few questions that are harder and specific, hence I mentioned to pay attention to any hard numbers in the drivers manual.

I believe you only need to pass 70% of the exam and when I did it (many many years ago), the exam would just stop once I got 70%. Don't worry too much about it. You are getting a learner's permit so you aren't expected to know everything - just enough of the rules of the road to be competent.

you can take free practice tests online, if you google “learners permit practice test massachusetts” or something like that. they’re very helpful!

Do you have a driver's license from your country. If so you can apply for an international driver's license.

Make sure to memorize all numbers, like the actual penalty fees and such for 1st, 2nd violations and such. Including numbers for junior operator licenses. There are some videos on youtube that have realistic and useful questions, just see what the comments say.
