Just observed a young woman near Jackson Square going 30 mph on the sidewalk, had to whip around two girls around 12 years old. I have seen these become more popular recently, but if you are going to be a shithead then expect a lot of hate coming to you. If you want to speed like a bike use the bike lane. If you want to be on the sidewalk then don’t be a shithead

Best I can do is whatever the hell I want with no regard for others, sorry.

Do you think you might be exaggerating the speed a bit?

Bikes and scooters are technically allowed on the sidewalk almost everywhere in Cambridge: I think everywhere they are prohibited has signage indicating so.

Obviously pedestrians have the right of way on the sidewalk with no exception though.

As an aside, going >jogging pace on the sidewalk sounds absolutely bone-jarringly miserable, and I don't understand why anyone would.

Chuck Norris was riding that scooter, backwards, on one leg, making a grilled cheese.

OP is discussing etiquette, not law. Anyone rising that way is a dickhead. even if we want to discuss law, the way a lot of people drive their scooters is reckless and riders on the sidewalk are supposed to indicate that they're passing instead of whipping around at the last second with no indication.

If only there were some sort of professional that could uphold the societal norms that protect the safety of others.

I don’t have a problem with scooters if they yield to pedestrians. Some people who use them seem to have a very strong disconnect with how dangerous scooters can be. Especially at speed. Still better than them getting behind the wheel of a car though.

"The operator of a bicycle shall ride at a speed no greater than an ordinary walk when on a sidewalk or when entering or leaving a sidewalk."

You're technically allowed, but you can't really operate it at normal biking speed.

People who do this and people who ride bikes on the sidewalk (thinking of you, girl riding on Mass Ave between Symphony and Hynes) during rush hour are fucking dipshits

Also, relating to a run-in earlier tonight, please have a headlight if you're riding at night.

Honestly they'll get their just desserts scootering on the sidewalk. Those small wheels will jam on the smallest imperfections and rocks throwing the rider face first over the handlebars.

I actually run slower in the sidewalk with my electric scooter compared to me walking.

I guess this includes the dipshit in the dairy aisle at market basket. He was wearing a helmet, so not sure if he runs the sidewalks or just knows how crappy the streets are.

Riding anything at speed (i.e., > 3mph or so - walking speed) on a sidewalk is not only an asshole move, it's dangerous to everyone involved, including most especially the rider. You are just begging to have someone walk into you, get clothes lined by a leash, have a dog or kid jump into you, get hit by a car pulling out and not expecting high speed on a side walk, etc, etc etc.

Better than biking in a door zone, I guess. Maybe. But a super bad idea.

So, of course, common as dirt. Even more of a reason that it's dangerous.

That’s clearly a bad place to ride on the sidewalk, but it’s also not illegal to ride on a sidewalk and it’s also quite dangerous to ride on the road in certain spots in Boston.

Best solution is to continue building out bike lanes and rights of way for and then make it illegal to ride on the sidewalk.

I hate these scooters so much. There is a shithead in Quincy who rides it very fast on the sidewalk. He frequently zooms very close to me and my dog, which obv scares the shit out of the dog, who goes nuts barking. Then the guy makes shitty comments. This has happened multiple times, so I’m assuming that it is on purpose.

Then don’t drive in the bike lane.
