Its as art should be enjoyed, in the dark, with bad lighting.

You can gift wrap a shit to look like a heart, but honestly... it's still a piece of shit..

The abundance of hearts in cultural iconography seems to be growing in inverse proportion to the amount of fucks anyone actually has to give about anyone else.

Stop trying to make it happen.

It looks like someone holding either a massive turd, or a giant dildo. It looks that way because of the back of the arms don't have an arm like structure, and there are "back of the arms" seen from almost every angle. This picture is slightly better than most because it has the least amount of back of arms / massive turd / giant dildo in the shot possible and it is dark.

It's not disrespecting MLKs memory to think that this statue looks like some holding a massive turd or giant dildo. You don't have to find an angle where it is least awful. Sometimes art is just awful. It's okay. I'm totally going to show out of town folks the hands holding a massive dildo statue, because it's hilarious. Sometimes art is so bad it is hilarious, and these arms that appears to be holding up a massive, floppy dong are just one such piece. Stop trying to be proud for the "right" reasons, and accept the hilarity of being proud of our arms holding aloft a giant dildo statue for the hilariously wrong reasons.

BUT SERIOUSLY

At some angles to me it looks like Coretta is totally holding up her man, and I love that angle.

Everything and everyone is more attractive when the light's are dim. In all seriousness, I saw the statue the other day and it's fine. I don't know why ppl spend so much time on their computers commenting on the ugliness of the statue. Oh wait, I do know. Those people suck and have no lives. Mystery solved.

I was finally able to see it in person last week. I thought it would make more sense in person. It didn’t.

In person it’s huge!

IAmRyan2049 t1_ja6rwbc wrote

It looks great in drone photographs from above. The incredible artistic achievement is apparent from that angle.

Unfortunately no one will ever see that, and it looks like a punchline. It’s butt cheeks

MurdrWeaponRocketBra t1_ja6s164 wrote

It's got a few good angles. It also has a few angles of body horror where it invokes the sense of amputated limbs. And one angle where it looks like hands holding a giant dick.

Sculpture is meant to be seen from all angles. If a piece of 3D art fails at half its perspectives, it's not a good work.

MarquisJames t1_ja6sbej wrote

Yeah I mean that’s the angle they should’ve showed it to everyone first. It’s definitely supposed to be a heart. Also it’s idiotic that people think you can’t enjoy art in the dark. It’s a sculpture not the fucking Mona Lisa

I saw it in person for the first time recently and tbh it looks fine from the ground. Seeing it from a higher angle with those drone shots really didn't do it justice.

It was also super cool being able to walk under the statue so it was as if you were in the embrace too.

I don’t see why people hate it at any angle to be honest. Is it my favorite piece of art? No at all. But, for a public park, you want something that’s not too bold because people’s taste in art varies so much and you want to aim for it to be acceptable to most. I’m still confused why it’s not. It fits right in with public park art, in my opinion.

-doughboy t1_ja7kyvh wrote

I have seen it in person too after first only seeing pictures, where I thought it looked like shit. My feeling is that it will look better to everyone when the weather is sunnier, we have later sunsets, the park is greener, etc. It is not great, but it's not as awful as everyone makes it out to be.

ThaMac t1_ja7skd3 wrote

I’ve been there and I feel no differently after seeing it in person. From most angles it looks like two hands holding a huge turd or a huge bronze dick.

From some angles, it goes look like someone performing cunninlingus. I didn’t notice that in pictures, so there’s that I guess.

"Stop trying to make it happen"

In response to one person expressing their enjoyment of a piece of art. Get over yourself buddy. The world doesn't live by your subjective opinions. You've got a lot of growing up to do. Smh at your upvotes. Come on Boston.

TheDoktorIsIn t1_ja7y2ql wrote

I mean, yeah it's subjective but it's also a popular subjective opinion. At what out does a "great" public work of art become meaningless if the masses don't enjoy it?

The Embrace being wildly unpopular is not an uncommon opinion. It's subjective, sure, but it's the popular opinion.

So everyone thinks they are"the one" to show the perfect angle that this monstrosity looks good. But wait you haven't seen it from this angle.

2

orielbean t1_ja8ffde wrote

If you look at the photo source, the artist ignores the perfect part of the photo subjects - their happy beaming smiling faces.

Coretta and Martin both have gorgeous smiles that convey all the gravity of the moment. Whereas the hug is a bit awkward and candid…

Rindan t1_ja9j6vq wrote

You misunderstand. I don't hate it. Bad art awesome. I like it. I literally hope we keep it forever and will be disappointed if they give into public pressure and bring it down. What other city has two massive bronze arms holding up a big flaccid schlong? That's a thing to brag about and show people. The only thing we need to do to improve it is to give it a good nick name. "Two arms holding aloft a big floppy dong" is just too long to say.

2

cspank523 t1_ja9zk1g wrote

From that angle it looks like a heart which is nice. Problem is there's another angle where it looks like a dick.
