I was in a bit of a reading slump starting December. Having started 5 titles in the month and feeling it was going nowhere. I finally broke down and decided to get into Discworld.
The question was then deciding where to actually start. Internet seems to likely recommend Wyrd Sisters, City Watch or Death as starting points. I chose to go with City Watch mainly because we don't get a lot of fantasy stories about the city watch. As the Dedication points out - these are no name NPCs. Running into rooms to immediately get slaughtered.
What I found in Guards! Guards! is a proper absurdist fiction. Beneath the tropes, parodies, the slapstick lies the understanding of humanity. The mundane day to day, our pettiness, our greed, our shallowness and often our common fault of letting "evil" be. And to see people break off from this to finally do what's right. Though not without several accidents along the way. There is depth to all the humor. It made me laugh out loud. And then spend hours after pondering about society.
Is it too early to say I may have fallen in love with this ragtag, understaffed, way over their heads group of city guards?
Also, I laughed far more than I should with this line -
>Thunder rolled...It rolled a six.
I do plan to finish all of City Watch first. Then jump to either Wyrd Sisters or Death after.
