I saw so many suggestions here to read the Binti trilogy by Nnedi Okorafor that I was really surprised not to love it. If they hadn't all been in one volume, I probably wouldn't have read past the first novella. They weren't bad, just felt overhyped.

Tried for a couple of years to get enough copies of Where the Crawdads Sing for our book club (through the library) and we finally decided we'd read it over summer vacation as the movie was coming out. So disappointed! Everyone had raved about it, it got great reviews, but I was so frustrated reading it. It's between this and The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.

Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky tbh. It was good, I enjoyed it, but I it was definitely not a 11/10 masterpiece that most people recommend it at.

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. Reads like a Gary Stu fanfic and the humour feels forced, like a sitcom without the laugh track.

Ready player one - kept hearing about this, long before the movie came out and it read like a series of family guy jokes where the entire point is just to get a reference

Kingkiller chronicles- same group recommended this and while it isn’t bad it was entirely too overhyped for a series that wasn’t finished and looks never will be

Song of Achilles, it's not even that bad even though I still think the two mains have the personalities of wooden furniture but people had me thinking it was going to be the second coming of jesus for how hyped it was. Definitely the most "I'm not mad, just disappointed" book Ive read in a bit

Yes! After seeing such high praise for this book, I was absolutely baffled at how amateurish, obvious, and unsatisfying everything was. Different strokes, I guess, but this one was surprisingly bad, imo.

This is deeply unpopular but for me it was The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman. I just didn’t get what was happening half the time; whereas with some books like The Master and Margarita I’m confused but pleasantly along for the ride anyway, for this one I was just kind of like “that’s it?” by the end. But I think Gaiman just isn’t for me - have also read American Gods and Coraline and he’s an objectively great writer, just not my style.
