Hey bookworms! So my Wife's family does Christmas Cookies every year, and it's become a tradition. A long time ago, I ran out of normal ideas, then I ran out of weird ideas, so I started making cookies about all the books I read that year! Last year I posted 6 cookies and you all guessed most of them!

This is the 2022 batch. Two are sequels of my pic from last year (Last year); I kept reading in those universes. Three of these came out in the last six years, with one just a few months ago. And the oldest book in the set was delivered to me in pieces. Two of these authors are deceased. One shares a title with a recent Netflix series, and while it's not the same protagonist, they share a common character. And the second one's text is "1P" (the black icing tip was a little too thick), but I think I still captured the subject's good side...

See if you can guess which is which and Happy New Year!

Edit: on left and you're so close!

2) Going Postal by Terry Pratchett

3) What If? 2 by Randall Munroe

4) Leviathan Falls by James S.A. Corey

5) Dracula by Bram Stoker, specifically Dracula Daily, a real-time email newsletter version (/r/DraculaDaily)!

Hints:

  1. Napoleon III and Abraham Lincoln are both part of the plot, as is Franz Joseph of the Austrian Empire. And yes it's about the failed reign of Maximilian, but from another perspective.

No, but I can see why 3 reminds you of PHM. I did that one last year. 3 came out this year, if that helps.

I’m definitely wrong with #1 as that appears to be a Mexican flag and HotS was set in Peru.

1

kevnmartin t1_j1wowvx wrote

It can't be Mexican Gothic because that was set in the 1950's.

1

TonytheEE OP t1_j1wxf79 wrote

Yeah, 1 is set in the 1860s, primarily.

Is 4 the Expanse series?

I love Terry Pratchett! Goin' Postal was a good book and introduced Moist Von Lipwig to the STP universe.

Is #4 related to Game of Thrones?

2

TonytheEE OP t1_j1yqqjs wrote

Heck yeah it is. MVL quickly slid into my favorite protagonist list. When he's upping the stakes near the end of GP, I felt as excited as he was! I got Raising Steam for xmas, and I can't wait to get into it!

But no, #4 is expanse related. Check the comments. Someone got it already.

Negative on all accounts, but you're close on 1 and 5! 1 is a Hispanic author, and 5 IS a classic monster in that vein.

No, I'm thoroughly impressed with how many spanish authors you know, though. I'll give you another hint. It takes place around the time of the American Civil War.

I added them after a few hours. What's water for chocolate about?

1

akasubie t1_j20jlxi wrote

Como Aqua Para Chocolate is a Mexican novel by Laura Esquivel It is a passionate love story that takes place in northern Mexico during the Mexican Revolution and it a great intro to Hispanic magical realism. It is a quick read if you need a fill in between books

TheDarkAssassino t1_j1zik7i wrote

It’s an interesting text, but I found it amusing that they were having us read erotica-esque literature in high school lol.
