Get the original novel. They've toned the film down, and they censored it further for TV.

Def buy the regular version. The cursing is part of the humor.

Thank you! That was exactly what I was wondering about!

As someone who doesn't like a lot of language, I'd still say get the original. One thing in the Martian is every time people used profanity I was sort of like...yeah, this situation actually calls for it lol like they were under a lot of pressure. I think it adds when I normally wouldn't think it would.
ArcadiaRivea t1_ix5i8zj wrote
Ah, that makes sense! I don't remember how I watched it the first time (I want to say "streaming service" but don't remember), this time was TV and it definitely started before the watershed
farmersboy70 t1_ix5iixi wrote
If you're watching it here in the UK, they usually cut that line at the end about 'farming in shit'. Makes the scene very awkward, and is a pointless cut.
ArcadiaRivea t1_ix5ivub wrote
Oh yeah! That's the sort of time I don't mind - when it's in context! (It's when it's just lots of random profanities, just for the sake of it and no apparent reason that a book just loses me, I don't really know why)
That's perfect though, sounds like it does actually have reason for being in that book
ArcadiaRivea t1_ix5juoh wrote
I am! And I'll look out for that (on plus hour so it's still going, but nearing the end)
One of mine and my mum's favourite running jokes is "Matt Damon's poo potatoes" because of that

Please post 'Should I read X book''What do I need to know before I read X' questions, in our Weekly Recommendation Thread.
farmersboy70 t1_ix5mzka wrote
Yep, cut.
ArcadiaRivea t1_ix5n9i5 wrote
Sorry, I thought it fitted here as I wasn't after a recommendation, purely which version is considered the better one (like the difference between a movie and the book it's based on, and which is considered the better of the 2, I read the rules and see "which version of x is better" somewhat often here so thought it was ok) but I'm sorry. I'm also not very good with words
ArcadiaRivea t1_ix5njj2 wrote
Why would they cut that line? It didn't seem particularly offensive and there were other swears so it doesn't seem like it was for the sake of completely cleaning it up either
farmersboy70 t1_ix5nrqk wrote
Beats the hell out of me. You should what they do to the remake of Hellboy, its nearly as sanitized as the remake of Hellraiser.
ArcadiaRivea t1_ix5nyj8 wrote
Been a while since I've watched that movie, but sounds awful
farmersboy70 t1_ix5o50l wrote
There are some splendid scenes at the end, when all sorts of demons ruse up and kill people in all sorts of ways...most of that is cut.
ArcadiaRivea t1_ix5oca9 wrote
That is terrible, especially compared to some of the stuff they do put on TV...
CrazyCatLady108 t1_ix5xw3z wrote
No worries, we are here to catch those edge cases. :)
A good rule of thumb is that if you are asking a question about a book you have not yet read, it probably belongs in the recommendation thread.
ArcadiaRivea t1_ix68996 wrote
I shall remember that in future, thank you :)
mimiruyumi t1_ix70xzj wrote
I totally agree. Sometimes I feel authors just add profanity because they feel like their book isn't "adult" enough without it. But it definitely doesn't feel that way in this book, at least to me.
ArcadiaRivea t1_ix7ftoz wrote
You have described exactly what I was trying to say, yes! (Sometimes I'm not great with words ha)
But that's good, I'm really looking forward to it!
Galadyn t1_ix5gvz5 wrote
I haven't actually read the "younger readers" version, but I can attest there's quite a lot of adult language in the original.
