Becky Chambers books - both the Wayfarer series and Monk and robot series. it's scifi about regular people's everyday lives
Un Lun Dun by China Mieville.
And not a book, but Big Trouble In Little China is a classic example.
Well, without spoiling it too much Prince Of Nothing is so good in this regard.
Granted the main character (not exactly main protagonist, but it’s kind of fluid in this story) is actually a bit of a chosen one, it’s more subtle how it all plays out.
Absolutely recommend this trilogy
Pretty much anything HP Lovecraft wrote, the chosen one is always a blob of evil the size of the universe made of jelly, lol
Relatable lol
Joe Abercrombie's The First Law series sets up a MC twist pretty well
I don't know who the real bad guys are in those books.
I've read all 9 First Law books. If you are referring to the end of the first trilogy, I'm not sure it counts. Does it?
Yeah, referring to end of the first trilogy. I didnt read beyond there. I think it counts, but without spelling out the plot I guess it depends how you're interpreting "MC" status
Brandon Sanderson did an AMA here you might want to take a look :) Here's a link to all of our upcoming AMAs

The Book of the Ancestor by Mark Lawrence has a chosen one. The main character is not it.
