I don't know that it would be considered illegal, but it does sound pretty boring to read the play by play for a game of Uno. Just mention "They played Uno for an hour" and then move on.

I do kind of disagree. Books are meant to make detailed and elaborate points about minuscule detailed, strategic use of symbolism etc. A game would be a format, for example the chess match in Harry Potter

Brands/trademarks are used in fiction all the time. This would almost certainly be fine under fair use, unless the author was trying to slyly publish the rules of the game themselves.

I suppose I more mean elaborate character designs of something like magic the gathering or Yugioh. A card game in which characters imagine vivid depictions of actions that take place within a game

Hi there. Per rule 3.3, please post book recommendation requests in /r/SuggestMeABook or in our Weekly Recommendation Thread. Thank you!

I wasn’t making a book recommendation request. I was asking about book legal jargon?…

Then your question is more appropriate for a writing subreddit. /r/writing is a great place to start.

Think you’re really out of line with moderating here tbh. What else can you expect from reddit though lol

You mean like the characters are playing monopoly and one person buys Boardwalk or whatever but they lose to the person who bought those mediocre light blue properties but bought more hotels?

Yes this isn’t abnormal. It’s like using a brand name or something.

I read a book where some siblings had their own made up game they had come up with as kids and played into adulthood and it was central to the plot. I forget what it was, it was something kind of 1920’s Gatsby style.
