In Death series by JD Robb

In the first books, there were tons of details about how the world has changed, how technology and medicine has advanced, the new ways of life etc. The victims were more diverse and interesting, the endings more unpredictable. Now I feel like every book is the same, but different. There are a couple good ones thrown in there for sure, but overall it’s someone is killed, maybe a few, murderer is at large. Clues clues clues. Big closing scene. Some good sex thrown in there. But over all we see a lot of the same things, the same scenery, the same stuff. I miss the old books where it really felt futuristic, surreal and different. I just feel like the only ways Robb reminds us they’re in the future is one of four ways, and you’re going to see all 4 in every book:

  1. Using a different word for awesome (mag, iced etc)
  2. blaster
  3. flying cars
  4. AutoChef Maybe it’s just me but the earlier books were a lot better! I’m on Kindred and just feel a little bored. I still love the serious but am just a little in a slump I guess.

The earlier books show more effort, I agree - the more recent books in the series are getting downright formulaic. And honestly, I wish she'd chuck the sex scenes because there are too many, and Eve never seems to change. She's still fairly clueless, grumpy, and brusque with no progress, whereas Peabody, Mavis, the other detectives show growth.

Sadly, I don't read the books for Eve, I read them for the other characters.

i fell in love with the setting and it’s uniqueness. now i feel like i forget it’s years in the future, and because she doesn’t set the scene like she used to, her use of “futuristic” lingo and words feels forced and almost like they don’t belong. i miss the victims being diverse instead of just.. people. i really liked the book where the homeless man was killed in his little house tent. i can’t remember which book it was. but i remember i couldn’t put it down. now i almost have to force myself to continue reading.

I agree with you. I feel many of the later books don't have the same 'edge'. I keep reading just to get the updates of what is happening in the lives of the characters I've become attached to - Peabody, Mavis etc.

I feel like she started out with a new, great book concept that was different from others, and sort of eased her way right into being extremely similar to all other romance crime books. I’d be willing to wait longer between each book if it meant she took the time to add in those details again. I feel like she’s pumping them out too fast to have time to add in all those old things and it makes me sad.

I wanted to like them, but I found the writing pretty weak from the beginning. On the whole, I prefer her books under the Nora Roberts name.

I have been a fan of the author since she began writing.

Like you I loved most of the early 'In Death' books. The last 5 or 6 are terrible. I know the main character was an abused child. I realize in real life that is something that will follow you forever. But it becomes a major issue every few book.

The books have also become bloody and cruel.
