My record was 3, sometimes 2, but I prefer to concentrate on 1.

My limited time now means that even 2 would take forever.

Lae_Zel t1_iucvdwx wrote

Most of the time just 1.

When I know I'm going to read a lot I tend to have more than 1 as it helps me stay interested and motivated.

I have 2-3 one of which is an audiobook.

Usually two but sometimes three but I usually try to limit it to two at a time.

I once tried 5 books, and then read them individually after 20%. I would say two.

I'm reading The Stand from Stephen King and I'm only at page 364/1209, but kind of want to read a Terry Pratchett book. Also a few others that have raised my interest since I'm on this subreddit.

So, for now, just one.

Currdog t1_iud57zd wrote

2-3, but always different genres. Usually one fiction, one non-fiction, and a random 3rd.

One audiobook for me, one for listening with the kids, and one physical book. Occasionally I will read full chapter books for bed time, which would add a fourth book into the rotation. The kids books are usually ones I read from my youth though, so they’re well loved favorites and not new.

I usually have 2 books going at once. I keep one in my bag to read during my commute, another on my nightstand.

2

jelly10001 t1_iudcppm wrote

Usually just one, although I have on occasion read two where one book was too big to take out with me (I like to read in cafes when I can).

dharmabum321 t1_iudepx1 wrote

It depends on the genre. With science fiction or historical fiction, usually 1 at a time. With non-fiction, 2 or 3. With poetry - many!

2

Eleflan t1_iudgiyy wrote

I always have 2, one audio and one paper/ebook. I might on occasion get a third if it's non fiction, short stories, or a buddy read with an agreed upon slow pace.

I usually read about three at a time:

  1. Work of fiction read purely for fun

  2. Work of non-fiction read for fun or academic purposes

  3. Work of fiction or literary criticism/theory read for academic purposes

CitricDrop8363 t1_iudoiu8 wrote

2 at a time for me. I drive for a living so I'll normally listen to podcasts or audiobooks. Then read the book in my bag while I wait to be loaded/unloaded.

Well currently I have 3 books going. One memoir, a Golden Age murder mystery, and a children’s mystery because autumn and winter make me want mysteries. Usually I try to totally different genres but in situations like this where the genre is the same I go for different age ranges and/or time periods or different subgenre.

Two or three: audiobook, print book, book of poetry.

Three, usually. The main book I’m reading, the book I’m reading with a friend, and a less intense book for nighttime reading (I don’t read horror or suspense at night).

EclaDragon t1_iueg83z wrote

I try to read only one at once, but sometimes I pick up a second or third book. Sometimes its because I didn't finish reading a library book before it had to get returned (because I read books mainly from the online library this happens automatically). Sometimes its because I just don't feel like reading my current book either because of recent events, my current mood, or health. At the moment I think my Goodreads is at around 10 books I'm currently reading.

forestfaey t1_iuem1kx wrote

Right now I have 6 books going at the same time (eek!). I usually have around 4: one digital, one physical, an audiobook and a nonfiction for my degree/work.

JackandFred t1_iueslkw wrote

I used to do one. But I realized recently I didn’t have a real reason why. Just because we read one at a time in school? In school I could pay attention to more than one subject at once so I can read more than one book at once.

To answer the question 4right now: mason and Dixon, moby dick, the sun also rises, and the odyssey (Fagles translation).

It’s not like I’m on a time limit so if I read four at once I’ll just read slower, but there’s no problem with that.

mhytrek55 t1_iuet5t2 wrote

Two at a time, unless o get really into one then I’ll just focus on it

2

practicaloppossum t1_iufe532 wrote

Usually two - one that's heavier and will take a while to get thru, and one lighter for some easy entertainment. And a magazine or two.

1

DaBow t1_iufseko wrote

Three to four.

I'll usually read fiction at home before bed or in the morning.

I like to read at the pub as well so that is generally when i read non-fiction (particularly history)

2

Archerofyail t1_iugcqtt wrote

Just one at a time. I've tried to read multiple books at once, but it never really works for me, I usually just end up focusing on one at some point, and then losing interest in the others.

Amzuja t1_iugjdk8 wrote

One, unless it’s scary and then I’ll read that only in the day and a lighter book when it’s dark. I love scary books but the anxiety at night isn’t always worth it!

I generally have one novel and one audiobook in progress, and I always have a collection of short stories and short fiction podcasts too. It just depends on my workload and activities.

Biotic_Factor t1_iugqoo7 wrote

I used to force myself to read one at a time but I've found I much prefer reading several at a time, usually ranging from 5 - 10 books on the go at once.

What this lets me do is:

  1. Have several options available depending on what kind of mood I'm in (like for instance fiction or non-fiction)
  2. Give me the freedom to pick up a book that I stumble upon and want to read immediately, without the guilt of "i'm already reading X..."

Right now I'm reading:

Feminist Theory: From Margin to Center
The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity
Stranger Faces
Treacle Walker
Meditations
The Bell Jar
Happiness, Like Water
Of Love and Other Demons
Out of the Ruins
