I try to avoid unfinished series, but it's not just for the risk of them not being finished, but also because I tend to forget a lot of the details if I have to wait, let's say, a year between books. Authors/publishers could help by including a summary of the story so far at the beginning, but they seldom do.

This is why I love Tad Williams because he always includes a good summary at the start of his new books. Plus I know I can trust him finishing his series 🙏

I tend to find that reading the last few chapters is enough to jog my memory for a new book, but if it doesn't, that means I can get the full enjoyment out of a re-read.

You can read the plot summery of the previous book on Wikipedia; I've done that occasionally.

lol. spot on. I read I think all of the harry potter books. The past books were basically a hazy blur as I read the new ones.

Well-written series usually pay attention to drop clues about previous events in the first chapters, no kludgy "previously on" needed.
