Am I just being grumpy or has anyone else gotten snarled on MLK this week? I usually hit a light or two but I have gotten completely stuck commuting in and out of the city this week (I commute to Howard County), which usually only happens if there’s an accident. I really hope that this is just a phase because it took me 20 minutes to get to 395 this morning at 8.

MLK is a poster child for bad light synchronization. One usually has to be going 45+ to get more than one green light in sequence. On rare occasions, I have traveled north or south on MLK, usually a Sunday Morning, and passed through 4-6 lights. But most of the time it gives the side streets preference. Esp around Uni MD.

Wow, that’s odd. I was thinking about posting this very same question.

Yesterday and today it was absolutely packed on MLK when there’s literally nothing holding anyone up and it pretty much clears up completely by the time you get toward the casino/Russell Street. Odd and super annoying.

u/bmorecityDOT any insight?

My coworkers and I have been complaining of this, this week. It seems the lights are off sync and adding an extra 5-10 minutes to our commute.

Yeah, my commute home took forever on MLK. I thought there must’ve been a wreck….nope. Nothing that would cause traffic.

Thank you all for validating me. I will never forget around 5 years ago when they changed the lights downtown and it was CHAOS. Let’s hope they fix this soon.

My favorite poor light synchronization is Loch Raven between the city line and Woodbourne. I drive the speed limit +5 and end up hitting red at every light. Sometimes if I drive like a maniac, I can beat the cycle, but I don't like doing that, so I've just learned to avoid it or plan extra time. It's hilariously bad.

I'm like 63% sure it's the light at Mulberry causing the issue, or the pedestrian light next to the school. That one goes red so frequently without any people waiting to cross.

An update!

We've been working on it since last week. A few intersections' clocks have gone out of sync with each other, causing the corridor not to be synchronized.

We've been doing work on them, and need to keep monitoring them to make sure no more sync issues have happened.
