She tells you she's taking a job overseas that starts in a few months. And wants to get married so she can take you with. It's the first date BTW.

You do see it through to the end because of the morbid curiosity. And ask a lot of questions.

Hey, I like cheesecake! I just don't want to go to some sad Cheesecake Factory in a dead mall.

Boston Street and that shopping plaza at that time are like hell's half acre. I cannot imagine fighting through all of that to eat some just ok food.

Selecting an Atlas Group restaurant demonstrates a lack of imagination. It's like buying someone roses when you could have found out if they even like flowers.

You must be my neighbor who gladly accepted my offer to help shovel him out and then he walked off when his car was done. Just in time for me to realize my car had 2x as much snow on it as anyone else, motherfucker had just dumped his snow on/around my car.

All this to say there’s “making up rules” and there’s basic goddamn civility

I asked enough questions on our one and only date to be able to answer those questions!

It was somewhere in Africa and generally the workers hung out together a lot. They would make it a point to check out as much as possible. It was safer to do things in a big group as well. So it sounded exciting from that perspective.

Divorce rates are high because the +1 usually finds miscellaneous admin jobs, at best. The novelty of being somewhere exciting wears off quick when you find yourself being a secretary after formally working as a senior engineer. And that often breeds resentment. The employed spouse also gets to travel a fair bit (for work) which means the +1 gets to fly solo a fair bit but never fully fits in.

People who don't get married before heading over often get married while over there. Apparently having similar jobs makes things... easier. But they get divorced too because once the job comes to an end people can find out they don't actually have too much in common.

I will give her credit, she held up to my interrogation quite well. She also probably thought I was interested, so there is that.

Don't try to make sense of it. People want to believe that the effort they expend digging a car out so they can drive it somewhere means they now own that patch of road 'round the clock. "I did a hard thing for myself so now fuck any neighbor or visitor who isn't me!" as local custom.

TheCaptainDamnIt t1_iw55t7v wrote

Basic civility would be understanding that you are not special and entitled to public spaces because of sme you think you did makes you special over. everyone else.

And I help my neighbors dig their cars out AND don't expect anything in return. But you seem to think everyone and society owes you something when it snows.

They actually used to rent the space out at night for private parties with tables all around the tanks and it was cool as hell. The law firm I used to work for had events there.

Let’s be honest. There are not a plethora of parking spaces when it snows, so if someone shovels over a foot of snow from around there car, I don’t begrudge them wanting it when they return home.

A couple of weeks ago my wife and I were going to go out for dinner to celebrate a minor thing. Date night got cut short when we were mugged in the alley next to our rowhome and I got shot in the leg. Finally got home after ten hours in the hospital, never having had dinner.

So my worst Baltimore date would be that.

Not everyone that appreciates what Atlas has brought to the relatively shitty Baltimore restaurant scene is a “shill” - we suck next to DC or many other major cities when it come to good food options…. We’d rarely dine downtown if it weren’t for Atlas. Stop hating on folks willing to pour money into our dying and (sadly) dangerous city. Embrace ANYONE willing to invest!

Work up an appetite by doing some light shopping at the Galleria, followed by dinner at Hooters in HarborPlace. Take a night cap at Pratt Street Ale House and end the evening with a dip in the Inner Harbor.

What?? Taco Bell is one of the better options.

As long as it's the south S Haven St one. And the ones outside of downtown are even better.

...just don't go to the north S Haven St one at night...you have been warned.

There's like the same 50ish people on this sub who hate Atlas and think they are setting the narrative for Baltimore with their constant anti-Atlas rhetoric. The truth is Atlas wouldn't be as successful as they are and expanding constantly not just throughout the Baltimore region but DC, Annapolis, Philly, Texas, and FL if they weren't successful. I have no skin in the game with Atlas, I just find the constant anti-Atlas rhetoric on this sub ridiculous and boring, and I'm suspicious of the motives behind it. Perhaps it's people with failing restaurants badmouthing the successful competition? 🤔

DfcukinLite OP t1_iw6vpf5 wrote

Lol atlas aren’t “successful” because of merit. They’re billionaires children and grandchildren that were given a few restaurants on their families property harbor east in the four seasons with stolen concepts from chefs of merit, Then expanded chained versions of the same Restaurants in Texas, Florida and Annapolis. The DC locations aren’t doing that well and aren’t that popular because people in DC actually have taste. Atlas does well because all of their restaurants are on their family’s prime real estate in tourist areas and the steal ideas and poach talent from competitors. That’s it and all.

Again, not unique to Atlas. Our city is poor and crime ridden and I want to see as much investment as possible - especially in the downtown harbor area. We aren’t going to survive without tourist dollars and investment in dining (and real estate, and schools). There are plenty of wealthy privileged folks around that have chosen NOT to spend their inherited millions on Baltimore. I’m happy to have anyone spend money in Baltimore. The negativity around wealth in this town is obnoxious. I’ll take investment in a bunch of differently themed restaurants than investment in casinos and casino restaurants downtown any day. That said, glad we have the casino money too- I’m not gonna hate on the wealthy casino owners (or sports team owners) either. Baltimore needs it. We are not “fine otherwise” - we need to fix a lot in Baltimore and it’s going to take money.

Have her meet you up at that bus stop in front of the abandoned church on liberty heights, next to the gas station where everyone gets shot. Take a stroll down Garrison Blvd and catch the sunset at the playground right before you hit Belvieu where the hookers hang out and shoot heroin between their toes, then head down to Hoffmans Liquors on Park Heights and brown bag some plastic bottle vodka on the sidewalk until you’re ready to get food poisoned at one of the Caribbean restaurants next to the race track. After dinner invite her back to your grandmothers place to watch a movie, tell her you just need to pick your computer up from the shop on the way home and get stabbed trying to buy a $90 stolen MacBook from the guys in ski masks on W Belvedere and Cordelia.

My future wife and I met up there for a first date. It was nice. Drank some beer and ate some chicken tenders. It was the middle of winter and Fraziers is real cozy to sit in those big booths at that time of year. I didn’t really know what taking someone out on a “nice” date was at the time, but we seemed to have a good enough time that she stuck around.

Almost 9 years and 2 kids later, here we are.
