Thinking of moving to this area from north Baltimore. Is this an exciting area to live in? Walkable restaurants and bars in the general vicinity? Lively area? Seems like mostly townhouses when driving through it.
At one point, Highlandtown was it’s own town/city until Baltimore expanded its boundaries and absorbed it.

like the other commenter said, it's the Latino quarter of the city. not pristine but not impoverished. Patterson Park is a pretty great feature to live near.
Exciting? Depends on where you are and how far you like to walk. My part of Highlandtown is mostly quiet ish considering it’s a ton of rowhomes. But down on Eastern or Fleet (sort of Canton) there’s a lot there and a lot that goes on. This neighborhood does a bunch of community events and has a thriving neighborhood association. There’s often stuff at the park on warm days, lots of sports, and as others said, so much food and drink. There are at least three breweries (Monument City, Mobtown, and Ministry) along the periphery of the neighborhood too. We even have groceries and a fairly large branch of the Enoch Pratt library!
I moved here a year ago, and I’ve never been happier to live somewhere in my entire life. A couple months ago, my block came together to add cafe lights down the street, and now it feels like Christmas every god damn day and I love it.
If you’re looking for dense urban rowhome living that’s walkable to Stuff, there are more lively neighborhoods, like Fed, Hampden, or Canton, but this one isn’t bad; for me it’s just the right mix of quiet rows abutting busy main streets. And it’s just out of the way enough that we don’t get a ton of frat boy parties in my area (unlike Canton and Fells).
Parking still sucks, unless you have a parking pad tho

But I agree 100% with this sentiment, Highlandtown is awesome. Def one of the best areas to be in, not nearly as expensive as Canton, but the people are chill, way easier parking, more space.

I live up by Baltimore and Linwood intersection, so kind of highlandtown adjacent and Love Highlandtown. When I moved here I thought I would be spending all of my time in Canton but lately I have been finding myself drawn over to Highlandtown way more often. There is a ton going on. Bunch of great bars and restaurants, easily walkable/bikeable to Canton, Fells, Patterson Patterson Park. Pretty affordable still, too. Would absolutely recommend it.
I moved to Highlandtown a little over 2 years ago. I really enjoyed the park being a block away (I have 3 pups). Also being able to walk to local bars/Fells Point (Fells Point if you don't mind walking 20mins). Sally O's and Johnny Rads are also close by. However, make sure to lock your car doors and possibly put up a cam for the front and back door. I experienced package theft and car break ins along with other weird things. Before I started parking in the back of the house me and two of my neighbors got nails put in our tires? Not sure if it was a crazy coincidence but we all called tow trucks that morning. Then me and my next door neighbor had our cars broken into AFTER forgetting to lock our doors (the incidents happened months apart), so don't be like us. Nothing was stolen or vandalized thank god. Then we had the occasional weirdo looking to steal whatever wasn't tied down, looking into cars. I just wanted to bring this up cuz while the place is amazing and I VERY much enjoyed living there I feel like people never mention these things (better to be prepared). We are now located in Canton which we like, but we do miss the park being right there.
It’s a pretty bikeable area. On a bike or scooter you have everything you need without ever getting into a car. Some things may be a longer walk which is why I say bikeable. Depending on where you are in Highlandtown, the market on eastern may be a bit of a hike. Target is considerably far for a walk, but some people do it. Within the range of a bike or scooter, you have dozens of restaurants and bars. Walkability/bikability is livability to me and it sounds like it is to you as well OP, since you’re asking about it.
My ex owns a house there. Was mugged repeatedly and had multiple breakins, but kept making excuses because she loved the community. Seeing a guy shot and bleed out on her stoop sealed the deal. She moved to Govans
There are definitely streets to avoid. Leverton between East and Highland is a big one. With that said, the area is improving every year.
That's not Highlandtown, that's Baltimore Highlands.
According to that map the big problem block is actually part of the Patterson park neighborhood. But that GIS map is kinda odd. It has a Patterson Park and a Patterson Park Neighborhood section. I was pretty sure the Highlandtown Neighborhood association covered the first block of Leverton (the one I’m talking about, the 3200 block, to the west of Highland.)

Somewhat. That’s not something you’d say for Roland Park or Canton or Fells or Fed Hill though. Most of Highlandtown is fine but a handful of streets are still issues. Many of these are made up of mostly rentals.

Great neighborhood. Good mix of young people, young families, and people who have been here forever. Safe and lively.
There are MANY great restaurants and bars. All the Latin food you could want; Mexican, Honduran, Salvadoran. America you got Sally Os and Snake. And tons of bar food options in Canton and Patterson Park Neighborhood.
Highlandtown is Ellewood on the west (at Patterson Park), Haven on the East, Pratt on the north, and Eastern on the south. People call other parts of the city Highlandtown, parts of Baltimore Highlands and Patterson Park.
